Hi!

I've had this brick wall for a while now and I'm starting to think I'll just have to leave it be haha.

James McCarthy b. 1840 m. Catherine Morrissey 9 Apr 1869.

On the marriage registration James' parents are listed as Denis McCarthy and Ellen Hearne (or Hearn).

On his baptism the same names are listed, but I can't find any other record of either of them.

I've tried searching marriages and for older siblings of james but I've not reached anything yet.

Perhaps I should chalk this up to lack of registration for both of them?

Thank you!

Hannah

  • Hi Hannah,

Marriage of James McCarty of Barrack Street, Waterford and Catherine Morrissey of Ann Street, Wateford on April 9th 1869 in Waterford Cathedral. Parents: Denis McCarthy and Ellen Hearne and William Morrissey and Catherine Murphy. Witnesses: John Power and Julia Morrissey.

Children born in Morgan Street, other than Mary Ellen born in Kings Terrace 1870.

Some of the baptism records as well as a State birth for William in 1881 record James McCarthy as a "Servant", but does not specify. In the State birth record William's mother is recorded as "Kate".

It is likely that James McCarthy moved from Waterford in the period 1881 - 1901.

If I find anything further I will post it to you.

  • Hi Hannah,

In regard to James McCarthy - there is a baptism for a "James McCarthy" on July 14th 1840 in the parish of Killea. Parents: Denis McCarthy and Ellen Hearn. Sponsors: Joseph Hearn and Bridgid Flanagan. Address: Knockhouse. There is a Knockhouse Upper and Lower in the parish.  www.rootsireland.ie and www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith valuations

Considering the time period, it is possible that James was an only child?

Killea has marriages from 1780 to 1791, 1793 to 1798, 1815 to 1820, 1837 to 1838. It can be found at  catholicregisters@nli.ie  - Free Site.

Hopefully someone in the Killea parish may have knowledge of the McCarthy - Hearn family
