I am looking for information on my McCarty family who were from Athenry area.  Earliest know ancestors are Patrick McCarty (B circa 1810) and James McCarty (b circa 1796).  Patrick was married to a Sullivan (also from this area).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Correction:  Patrick McCarty was actually married to Maria Manning.  His son Thomas married a Barbara Sullivan.

There was also a James McCarty b. 1796 who married Catherine King.

Hoping for more information on this Athenry family.

  • Hi Mary,

There is a genealogy centre in Galway City in the area of Shantalla called Galway Family History West ltd, they should be able to help you http://www.discoverireland.ie/Arts-Culture-Heritage/galway-family-histo….

  • Hi Mary,

Do you think it is possible that the surname you are looking for was in fact 'Dooley'?  Names were often mispelt on shipping records etc back in those days due to literacy problems.  Just a thought....

    Regards

    Kerryn (from the Dooley's)

  • Sorry Ronan...I said Martin Hooley ...yes I am looking for him also....but first my grt grandfather Thomas Hooley whose marriage certificate  says he was born 1835 in Ireland.

The reason I am trying Athenry is some time ago, I found a Martin Hooley which is the name of my grt grt grandfather, Thomas Hooleys father. mentioned on a list of subscribers to some cause in Athenry.

    Thanks again Ronan.

    Kind regards,

    Mary

  • Hello Kerryn,

I have never come across the name of Dooleys in any of my family history. Not saying that someone may have written this down instead Hooley. It happened to my gggrandfather on my ggrandmothers side when  they mispelt his name and was only picked up by some kind person also looking for the surname but not my family.

Thanks for your email....worth thinking about .... We have to look at all possibilities to get results I think!

    Kind regards,

    Mary
