  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

Some general sites you might try for information are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

The Library & Archives of Canada - http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

    Irish Newspaper Archives: http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/

You can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • All I have is US census records saying that John and Catherine were born in Ireland, and the death record of daughter Jennie Louise.

The 1880 US census says Jennie was born in Canada.  I have a handwritten letter from her stating that her parents were John McCormick and Catherine Marr and that she was born in Montreal on November 26, 1844. The 1900 and 1910 censuses say she was born in Ireland. The 1910 census says she immigrated to the US in 1847.  Her State of Vermont death certificate says that her mother's name was Catherine Mann and that her birthplace was "on ocean."

Her grandson, my uncle, told me that she was born "on the high seas" and that she arrived at the Port of Montreal although no record of her arrival or that of her parents has ever been found.
