I am searching for information on Hugh McDonnell  (DOB and DOD unknown) and Ann Smith (died 3 Mar 1896, Clonosey, County Cavan, Ireland)

I know of 3 children

Alexander born Belturbet Cavan 1832 died 16 Oct 1929, married Ellen Mary Doyle and buried Calliope Queensland Australia (my GGfather)

Owen 1834? Who I believe married Margaret Tearney 7 Feb 1877, Kilmore, Annagh, Cavan, Ireland, died 15 Feb 1912, Clonosey, County Cavan, Ireland

I have found one child ..James McDonald 1879

Ann 1838, married Edward Connor 7 Apr 1875, Annagh, County Cavan, Ireland

I have found 4 children  John 1875, Mary 1879,  Rose 1879,  Hugh 1881

I have found the census record of both Owen and Ann (McDonald) for pension purposes.

Any information on any of the above but particularly Hugh and Ann would be very appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I don't think the 1877 marriage for Owen McDonald to Margaret Tierney is for your Owen McDonald. See link below. Note the Owen in the record was age 22 and his father was Owen and not Hugh.

I also did not find any info on Roots Ireland for Hugh McDonald.

Any other information on the family? Can you share the pesnion record you mention in your message.

  • Thanks for the correction on Owen and Margaret. The records I found didn't show his age or father's name and I had it in my family tree as a maybe so thankyou so much for clearing that up.

I have attached the pension record. I know that Owen did indeed die  15 Feb 1912, Clonosey, County Cavan, Ireland as he left his Will to his sister Anne. I have no further information on the family unfortunately.

Thank you very much for your help.

I have never seen that internal form. The Old Age Pension Act was passed in 1908 and likely effective in 1909. You had to be 70 and to prove age, the authorities searched the 1841 census. Your form was from the initial penion applications filed in Janauary 1909. Owen provided his parents names and where they lived and the clerks found the record and indicated that Owen was 9 in 1841 which makes his year of birth closer to 1832.

www.irishgenealogy.ie has civil death records online from 1878-1966 and index records for 1864-1877  The McDonalds lived in the Cavan registration district. There are two possible Hugh McDonald deaths in 1870 and 1874 which might be for your ancestor. I would wait until the 1864-1877 deaths are placed online.

Could be another year. They just added the records for 1878-1890.

  • Hi,

    Who is your grandmother?

Alexander, son of Hugh and Ann, used McDonnell. However, not everyone could spell in those days.

Owen's will leaving everything to Anne is in the name of McDonald.

This is Anne's marriage using both McDonald and McDonnell. Anne's husband, in various records is Edward Connor,  Edward Connors and Edward O'Connor.
