I would like to come to Kells in September to find more information about my ancester Michael MacGuinness (McGinnis) who was born in Kells Parish 24 Jul 1844.  He came to the United States in about 1867.  He had a relative, John H McGuinnis who was born in Kells Parish 5 May 1846 and came to the United States  in about 1852.  His father was Patrick McGinnis born about 1820.  I do not know where to begin to look for information if I come to Ireland.  I am currently staying in Mexico City as a humanitarian missionary, but will be released in September and would like to visit Ireland to find more information on Michael McGinnis.  Can you help me to know where to search if I come to Ireland.  

Thanks for any help, as we have been searching off and on for many years on our McGinnis family.

    Thank you for your enquiry.

    I would advise that you do your research online before coming to Kells. Use your time in Kells to walk in the footsteps of your ancestors, if they can be traced and enjoy the historical town of Kells and its surrounding countryside .

    church records are on www.ancestry.com, www.findmypast.ie and www.rootsireland.ie or catholic only unindexed on https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0940 . I find roots ireland the best. They have a daily, monthly and annual subscription.

    Census, tithe applotments and wills plus more are on www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie/ .

    Griffith valuations, a property survey is on http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ .

    Newspaper archives are on www.irishnewsarchives.ie and the british newspaper archives. A Find my past subscription gives access to the british newspaper archives website. The regional newspaper for Kells is called the Meath Chronicle archived from 1896, well past the era you require.

    Irish civil certs are on www.irishgenealogy.ie. non catholic marriage registration commenced in 1845, catholic marriages and all births and deaths registrations commenced in 1864 .

    Have a look at www.kahs.ie , a local historical society

    If you are on facebook join the private group IGP Co Meath Ireland genealogy group .

    I come from a neighbouring parish. I know the town and some of rural Kells parish, but not its families
