Hi there, I am currently seeking information on my 2nd Great-Grandfather Robert Charles McGowan who was born in Ireland sometime around 1826.

He moved to South Africa with his nephew Harry Dickson (his sister's son) and settled in Lusikisiki and had a family of his own. He married a south african women and had kids. One of his son's name is Jack McGowan.

I know that he was a trader in Lusikisiki and died in 1901 age 75yrs.

Please can you assist.

I am looking for his family in Ireland.

Kind regards

Carmelita

  • Hi Carmelita

There is a baptism record of Robert Magowan 1826 in ANTRIM on www.rootsireland.ie/

It costs to view the full record which will have the parish and MAYBE his parents' names

However, there are 2 public member trees on ancestry (Wynne & Crossley of Trodmorden) which have his birth as 1827 in Lowestoft Suffolk, & baptism 16 May 1827 same place; marriage to Elizabeth Crossley 15 Feb 1853 Dublin; death 1901 South Africa aged 74

  • Hi Col

According to my research, Robert Charles McGowan was married in Ireland until his wife died. He had 2 children with her. He then relocated to South Africa with his nephew (Harry Dickson) and remarried and had 6 children with his new wife. His kids names were Jane, Bob, Elizabeth (looks like he named her after his first wife Elizabeth), Tom, Leticia and Jack McGowan. 1 of these kids named Tom McGowan went back to Ireland for school and lived with his aunt who is Robert Charles McGowan's sister (Mrs Dickson - not sure of her full name).

Jack McGowan who is the youngest of Robert's kids is my grandmother's (Fanny McGowan) father.

I need to trace some of our family before my grandmother leave this world.

Many many thanks for your info. Looks like we closer than i ever dreamed of.

    Kind regards

    Carmelita
