  • The only births I can see in Ireland are for Peter and Sarah. The family appear to be in Coxhoe in the 1881 census. Children Peter & Sarah are shown there as born in Ireland, the rest in Co. Durham. Sarah was born c 1871 and Ann c 1874 so the family must have moved to England around 1872/3. (That's a domestic journey and no passenger records were ever kept for that type of travel).

Here’s Sarah Maginness’s birth on 9.7.1871 at Drumgreenah:

  • The 1867 marriage certificate tells us that Elizabeth was living in Drumgreenagh then. Her father was John Grimley, a dealer. (Peter’s address was Belfast though presumably he also came from the same general area).

The couple lived in Drumgreenagh for 5 or 6 years. If they held a house of their own it would usually appear in the Valuation revision records. I have checked those records for Drumgreenagh but there’s no McGuinness household there. However John Grimley is listed having plot 34a which was a 9 acre farm. My guess is that Edward & Elizabeth stayed with him.

Griffiths Valuation contains maps of the townland with the plot numbers shown. From that I can see that the Grimley farm today is on the Madden Rd, north of Keady. A few hundred yards south of the T junction with the B132.

The Grimley family had gone from the townland by 1876. Looking at the deaths in that area (Armagh civil registration area), there are 2 that might be John Grimley. One on 26.11.1869 aged 65 and the other 14.12.1874 aged 75. You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

The Irish censuses for 1861 to 1891 have all been destroyed.

  • Thanks Elwyn  Probably not worth investing in a local visit to Keady, as I live in Australia, long way to come.

    Cheers Roger
