Hello,

I'm trying to trace the ancestors of Ellen/Ellinor McNerny/McInerney who we believe was born in County Clare c1816.  She migrated to Australia (we don't know when yet).  She married a Samuel Lewis in Sydney, Australia in 1839.  Together they had six children.  We know that she died in Sydney, Australia in 1893 at the age of 77.

Her death on the Births, Deaths and Marriages website of the NSW Goverment, says mother and father unknown.

Any ideas please.

  • Dear Sheena:

Many thanks for your post.  I am a Clare volunteer and I will see if I can help you.  I note that you do not have Ellen's parents' names.  Do you happen to have siblings' names?  Can you give us the names of Ellen's children?  That might be a clue to some of the family names of the McInerneys.

Let me know and I will see what I can do.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hello Jane,

Thanks for replying.  No we know nothing about Elinor/Ellen except for her death notice in Sydney, Australia in 1893, that she came from County Clare.  Her marriage certificate says nothing.  Her death certificate says unknown and unknown when it comes to parents.

    Children as we know are:

    Henry Francis 1840-1901, Thomas James 184601886, Hannah 1843- ?, William J 1848-1907, Charles J 1849-?, Ellen M 1851 - ?

Good luck, we haven't been able to find her on a ship to Australia, yet!!!

  • Hi Sheena:

Do you have her husband's parents' names?  This might help to narrow down the search using first names as a clue for McNerneys in County Clare.

There is a very good book in Australia about migration into that country,  Kerry Farmer has written it and it's caled "Arrivas in Australia from 1788".  It is well worth a look in your local library as it contains a lot of good sources for researching.

Let me know if you find further information.

    All the best,

    Jane
