My great grandmother, Catherine McLaughlin married in Scotland. According to census and marriage/death certificates, she was born in 1876. Her mother is shown on Scottish certificates as Grace McGrory and father Hugh McLaughlin.

Through irishgenealogy.ie I have traced an 1876 marriage between Grace Brogan and Hugh McLaughlin, witnessed by Mary McGrory. Through Scottish records, I am certain Grace's maiden name was Brogan and she was previously married to Patrick McGrory.

The townland is Crislaghkeel, Fahan Upper.

I can find two births on irishgenelaogy.ie from Grace/Hugh marriage for Michael b1878 and Grace b1882 but I havent been able to find one for my g grandmother, Catherine. I have tried variations of both names and also tried Brogan and McGrory, with variations.

Does any one have any other suggestions?

  • Jeanette,

Here’s the death for Hugh McLaughlin in 1883:

Grace is shown as a spinster on her 1876 marriage certificate so that would suggest that any marriage to Patrick McGrory was after her marriage to Hugh (though I can’t see one in Ireland).

I don’t see a birth for Catherine in the stat records.

What happened to the family after Hugh’s death? Did they all move to Scotland?

  • Hi, Elwyn,

Thanks for your response. The family were still in Ireland when mother, Grace, died 1890. Death certificate shows Grace's father was Pat Brogan deceased and her death was registered by Kate McLaughlin.

I havent been able to find Catherine on the 1891 census in Scotland but she married Lawrence Cully in Lennoxtown, Glasgow in 1894. Her mother is shown as Grace McGrory on both certificates. I have her well documented from there.

Nothing for younger sister Grace as yet but I have a Michael McLaughlin age 13 on the 1891 census in Springburn, Glasgow. He is listed as half brother to householder, Patrick McGrory. Both born Ireland. I checked for marriage and death certificates for Patrick McGrory. His parents are shown as Patrick McGrory and mother Grace Brogan on both. He would be born about 1860.

According to her marriage and death certificates, Catherine would have been born in 1876, the same year Grace/Hugh married. Michael and Graces births were registered so I'd have expected hers to be registered as well. Im beginning to think she may be half sibling and was actually older, lying about her age, and adopted the name McLaughlin when her mother married. Maybe oneof those mysteries that will never be solved.
