Hello, I am attempting to find any information for a Johanna with the last name variants (Meara, O'Meara, Mara, O'Mara). Born to Father Patrick and Mother Mary in approximately 1832 she immigrated to the U.S. in approximately 1848-1850 and setteled on Long Island, NY. I cannot say for certain that she is originally from this parish or even County Tipperary for that matter but it would seem that the vast majority of families in Ireland with those last names originated from County Tipperary. Unfortunately I have no difinitive information as to siblings but any information that might be uncovered would be greatly appreciated. My research has produced last names with the possible spelling variations I have indicated above.

Thank you very kindly in advance for any efforts in assiting me.

The civil parish of Moyne is in North Tipperary. I searched the North Tipperary church records on the subscription site Roots Ireland for the years 1827-1837. I located a January 20 1836 baptismal record for a Joanna Meara with father Patrick Meara and mother Mary Salmon sponsors were Rody Mara and Margaret Cahill.  The parish was Lorrha which is at the northern most end of Tipperary and Moyne/Templetuohy parish is a good distance away. There was also a Judith Mara May 3 1835 father Patrick Mara and mother Mary (no last name shown) in Monsea parish which is also a good distance from Moyne.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Seeker . . .

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . to Tipperary County . . and the Town of Roscrea . . .

Roscrea . . the Town . . would . . like you said . . appears to be the homeplace of the Clan Meagher

Roger did some great research for you  (above) . . and given your limited input . . made searching very " iffy " . .

Mahers ..OMearas  etc . . come together in this district . . and encompass ..3 (three) adjacent Counties ..

i.e. Tipperary - Offaly (aka Kings County ) ..and Laoise ( aka Quenns County )

    I took Rogers search a little further . . including . . these two other Counties  . . including a broad time line . ..

    seaching . . between . . . 1827 - to 1837 . . 3 counties . . .BUT . .

    when I include father as " Patrick and Mother .Mary " . . NIL .. shows up . . .

BUT . . leaving out the Parents names . . . my search rings me back to ROSCREA . .

    Roger and Eamonn,

I want to thank you both so much for your efforts in assiting me in my search!

As I stated in my post her parents names were Patrick/Mary, that information is as per her death certificate from here in the U.S. so I am farily confident in that information. All census records that I have located here indicate her birth year to be either 1831-32 and while they can at times a bit inaccurate, the number and consistency of them leads me to believe it to be true. Also her headstone indicates that she passed away in 1899 at the age of 67 years. Once again I cannot say with any certainty that she originated from Tipperary but based on the origins of the name I figured I would start there. I will look into the records you have provided as I cintinue my research and if either of you have any suggestions as to additional likely places of her birth based on family name I would be quite interested.

Thank you both so much Again,

    Seeker

  • Hello Margot,

Yes she did marry but it appears it was after she arrived in the U.S.

Her husbands name was Thomas White ... according to census records he arrived in the U.S. approx 2-3 years after Johanna.

  • Hi Seeker,
was hoping to pick something up from the death of Johanna with her married ame, sadly no results.
Back to the Parish Books, I searched 1827 to 1838 and no Johanna to Patrick and Mary.

In Griffiths Valuation there is a Patrick Meara in Moyne this is in 1850.
    Griffith's Valuation (askaboutireland.ie)

I have searched for deaths for Patrick and Mary, sorry no results.
I will add you to my list and if I can find anything in future I will update you.
I am from the Meara Clan but in the Toomevara, Neneagh and Borrisokane area.

    Cheers

    Margot

  • Hi Margot,

It is quite a mystery but I will carry on searching. The most interesting possible match seems to be from 1832 Church baptismal records in Ballylooby with the last name spelling of Magher. All entries are in Latin but translate into the first names of both parents and Johanna as well. I would reiterate that I cannot say with any certainty exactly where in Ireland Johanna is origianlly from. She may well be from the Meara clan in one of the areas you mentioned above... I wish I could provide that information. Thank you for all of your efforts.
