I am asking for some help in locating an address in Dublin. It is listed on several death certificates as 3 Esplanade Villas, Dollymount or without the number 3. There are several Dollymount streets and it is also a neighborhood. The Meehan family resided there beginning about 1915 thru at least 1927.  I am unable to locate it on Google maps so it may not exist any longer.  Thank you!

Esplanade Villas was a small terrace or row of three houses on the Clontarf road (coast road), they were located a short distance to the north east of the junction with where Dollymount Avenue in now. The Terrace of houses between Esplanade Villas and the junction are St. Anne's Villas.

see attached 1935 map extract with the location marked.

Like many terraces or rows of houses like this the addresses (both Esplanade Villas and St. Anne's Villas) have probably been incorporated into the street/road they are on and included in revised numbering - so likely currently in the early 400s Clontarf Road. A number of older buildings survive along that section of the road that could date back to the early 1900s...

    p.s. I can see a P.E. Meehan listed at No. 3 in Thom's 1927

  • Dear Shane,

Thank you so much!!  I think that solves it.  The map is especially helpful.  May I ask where these color maps can be located?

Yes, PE Meehan is the family I am looking for.

  • The map is one I have on my website - see Dublin City & suburbs c1935.

You can view the OSI historic maps on GeoHive website - to see one with Esplanade Villas marked, try this link. The map layer selected is the 6" Cassini map dating from the 1930s. Esplande Villas is located on the coast road close to centre of the map.

I checked a later Thom's directory from 1932, and the entry for Esplanade Villas very helpfully notes that the houses are listed under 404 to 406 Clontarf Road. It looks like your Meehan's had left the the addess by that time as the householders are listed as 404-T.F. Laurie, 405-Edwd. Doyle and 406-R.G. Richardson. In the 1928 directory the villas are still listed seperately and R.G. Richardson is listed at no. 3.

I can push your dates for the Meehan's at the address a little - P. E. Meehan, J.P is shown at no. 3 in 1914, but not in 1912.

  • Hi Lisa

My grandfather's name was Patrick, my grandmother's name was Margaret Farrell, she lived in Julianstown Co.Meath before marrying my Grandfather.
Patrick was a member of the Gardai, as was my father.

  • Hi Marie,

I am sorry I only got notified of your first message today.

The Patrick Meehan who lived at the address was a retired District Inspector of the RIC.

So, are you related to him?

  • Hi Lisa

Just logged in!  Yes My Grandfather was in the RIC Patrick Meehan, he escaped from the BLACK and Tans.  He was a Superintendent when he retired as was my

father Thomas Meehan and I think my great grandfather was also in the Gardai.  My Grandfather is mentioned in a few books also.

    Regards

  • Hi Marie,

I am still confused. Are you related to the Patrick Meehan who resided at 3 Esplenade Villas in Dollymount c 1920?  He was born in 1846 and died in 1926.  He was a retired District Inspector.  I do not have a son Thomas listed for him.  Perhaps I am missing him on my records.  This Patrick was married to Mary Anne Cullinan.

Or is it just a coincindence that your gf was a Patrick Meehan, also in the RIC and you have a connection to the property he was renting?

Hoping we can clear this up.

  • Hi Lisa

You are talking about 404 Clontarf Rd ?  I am wondering was it my Grandfathers Father. Because I think he lived there before my Grandfather and Mary Anne Cullinan could have been my Great Grandmother?

I will try and find out because this is a big coincidence as there have been generations of Gardai in my family or RIC as it was called then.

  • Hi Lisa

It is totally weird how I came about your name as I was looking at a property I used to live in Clontarf and I put 404 in and it linked me to you.  As far as I have ever

known the Meehans have lived there, I have spent a lot of my childhood there.  When My Grandmother died at 97 two of my aunties lived there and now the husband of one of my aunties lives there.

I have your email and once i have more info I will let you know.

Where in Ireland are you staying?

  • Hi Hilary,

I would love to figure this out.  There seem to be two Patrick Meehan families that lived at this address.

If you would like to connect my email is LisaHBskt at gmail dot com

I am not sure if they are related.

    Please get in touch.

  • Hi There

I am not related to the Meehans but I do have an interest in 1 2 and 3 Esplandade Villas (404. 405 & 406 Clontarf Road), Dollymount, Clontarf.  My Great Great Great Uncle Peter Morgan owned all three houses in late 1890's.  He died in 1908 and left the three houses to his wife Margaret.  They lived in 1 Esplanade Villas and rented out the other two which appeared to have 9 apartments each at the time.  The last mention of Margaret at this address is in 1912 in the Dublin Electoral Rolls.  I cannot find any trace of Margaret after that, nor can I find where either Peter or Margaret are buried......    However, while researching Esplanade Villa's I found out the following:

The first mention I found of the Meehans was at No. 3 (now 406) in 1914.......

1914:  Lucy and Agnes are listed as living at No 3 Esplanade Villas as Lodgers of Patrick E Meehan

1916: Raid took place at No. 3 in search of Fr Meehan of Castlebar

1920  May Meehan at No 3 Esplanade Villas wins 1st prize in a singing competition

1926: Patrick Meehan of No. 3 Esplanade Villas (District Inspect of RIC and member of Dublin Corporation died aged 83

1927  Death of Louis Meehan of No. 3 Esplanade Villas son of late Patrick Meehan

1953 Death of Patrick Meehan of No. 1 (404 ) Esplanade Villas.  Was in the RIC and later joined the guards in 1922,  He was  a Superintendent in Granard  (His brother John Meehan was a Garda in Drogheda at the time of his death.   Note:  It appears the Meehans moved from no. 3 to no 1 Esplanade Villas at some point between 1927 and 1953.

That is the last note I have on the Meehans.......

I hope this helps fill in some gaps in your information.

I would be delighted if anyone reading this could update me  if they come  across any information on what happened to Margaret Morgan after 1912.

    Kind regards

  • Greetings and a Happy New Year to you!

I would love copies of what you found and I have copies from the Valuation Office from my trip last year.  I would be happy to share them with you.  Peter and Margaret are both still listed as immediate Lessors thru the 1937 book which is as far as I looked at the time.

I show the raid took place in 1920.  Perhaps there was another?

The Patrick Meehan who was in the RIC and then Garda and died in 1953 is still a mystery as to how he may be related to the prior Meehan family which are part of my family.

My email is LisaHBskt at gmail dot com.

    Cheers!

  • Hi There

Happy New Year and many thanks for your response.

You are quite right, the raid on No. 3 was in 1920 not 1916, my mistake.

I will email you copies of what I have found shortly.  I would be delghted to get copies of the information you found at the Valuation Office that mention Peter and Margaret Morgan.

    Kind regards
