Can anyone help me locate a marriage record for a Bridget Headen and Michael Archbold? It is most likely in County Kildare and possibly in Castledermot, but I'm not certain. The year would mostly likely be between 1793 and 1800.

I am also looking for a death record for Michael Archbold and/or his wife Bridget Headen Archbold.  I believe Bridget may have been born around 1804 in Castledermot, Kildare.  Unfortunately I have no information on Michael at all but assume he was born and died in County Kildare.

I truly appreciate any assistance I can get.

  • Do you know what religious denomination your Archbold/Headon couple were ?

The only Catholic Michael Archbold marriage I see around this timeframe is to a Catherine Kelly in St. Mary RC Dublin City. Not very many Catholic parishes have records going back to the 1700s or even the early 1800s, so it's possible there's no written record available for a marriage of your Michael and Bridget.

Records for other denominations, e.g. Church of Ireland, Presbyterian etc, are not as well covered online so searching can these can be more difficult without knowing a more detailed location, e.g. the name of a town or parish in County Kildare. I tried a quick search of the additional non-Catholic records online but did not see any promising matches.

A genral search of baptisms shows several Bridget Headon/Haydon baptisms in various parishes around County Kildare, Kilcullen 1795, Athy 1811, Castledermott 1802, Castledermott 1802, Castledermott 1804. Castledermott RC parish happens to be one that has early records going back to 1789 - most of the other parishes nearby have records starting much later e.g. Narraghmore 1827, Baltinglass 1807 etc, so the results we are seeing are only a small sample of those baptizesed in the area around that time.

Do you have any other clues that might help - e.g. names and dates of any children born in Ireland ?

  • Thank you so much Shane. They would have been Catholic and I believe the Heaven I'm looking for was Bridget born 1804 in Castledermot Kildare.

  • Shaes, here are the children I could find:

    1. Dan Archbold, born 1816 Castledermot, Kildare

Father Michael Archbold, mother Bridget Headen

Sponsors Helen Headen and Pat Nolan

    2. Pat Archbold (male)

Father Michael Archbold, mother Bridget Heydon

Sponsors James Hughs and Honor Byrne

The baptisms confirm that the couple were Catholic, images of the Castledermot RC registers are included on the National Library of Ireland website, and also indexed by FindMyPast and Ancestry. These registers cover back to 1789 for baptisms and marriages - there are several gaps, but none are noted before February 1821, so if the couple married in Castledermot RC parish they should have been recorded in these.

It's possible that the marriage is included in these but on a missing or damaged page, and was not possible to transcribe .. another possibility is that the marriage took place in another parish nearby where the records do not cover back far enough, although if this Bridget lived in the area that does not seem to fit since marriages generally took place in the bride's parish.

I had a look through some of the Castledermot registers - there are several sections that are very faded and very difficult if not impossible to read, I've attached an extract from the 1816 baptisms below, many early marriage pages are even more faded - see example from 1800 attached... if the marriage, and possibly additional children, are noted in these it may not be possible to locate them..

RootsIreland (pay-website) seem to have done a slightly better job at transcribing records for this parish, they generally work from the originals, so can sometimes make out additional details, I also checked their transcripts for the marriage or additional children but no success unfortunately.

  • Thank you Shane.  I have also looked at these registers and thought I would go blind.  I appreciate your taking the time.
