Michael Barrett (1789 – 1854) born possibly in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon, Ireland
He enlisted in the 40th Regiment of Foot in 1817 in Scotland, after desertion from an unknown regiment.
At some stage he married Eleanor (Ellen) Rourk (Rourke or Rowan) (1789 -1869).
In 1824, Michael was mustered on board the ‘Phoenix’ in Portsmouth harbour, England. The ship was to transport Irish convicts to Tasmania.
Ellen arrived in Tasmania on 9 April 1825 per Lady East with 3 children Catherine, John & Edward.

Maree:
I searched for a marriage record for Michael and Ellen on the subscription site Roots Ireland but I did not locate a marriage. As you likely know many RC parishes in Ireland do not have records back to 1820 and earlier. Loughglynn records begin in 1817 so a baptismal record for Michael Barrett would not be available.
I did find the three baptismal records for the children you highlighted in your message.

Hi Maree
I have Roscommon Barretts in my family tree and have done quite a bit of research into the Croghan and Loughlynn branches. Can you tell me what has pointed you to Loughlynn as a place of birth/ origin?
In 18th-century Co. Roscommon, Barret was not a common name. For example, only 6 families appear on record in 1749:
The Census Of Elphin 1749
Butcher – John & Catherine Barrett of Creglahan (south of Loughlynn near Cloonalis) parish of Kilkeevin
Broguemaker – Walter Barritt of Elphin
Tenants – Patrick & Giles Barrett of Treanacreeve (near Scramoge, Strokestown) parish of Lissonuffy
Labourer – Edward Barrett of Clashaganny (south of Tulsk) parish of Killukin
Carpenter – Widower Barrett of Roscommon town
Broguemaker – James Barrett of St. Peter's Athlone
Most Roscommon Barretts migrated into the county later from Co Mayo.
If you can tell me what sources you have for Michael's home county, I'd love to help.

Hello & thank you for your help.
I found reference to "Loughglynn" on his military records. Although the place was often misspelt, e.g. in 1820 he is recorded as being labourer from Laughin and another time is was rcorded as Glynn. Other records just stated Roscommon so I worked from there.
