My great grandfather Michael Coyle was born around 1860 in Donegal to Peter Coyle and Rose Lynagh.  The first record I hold for Michael is his marriage in Old Kilpatrick, Dumbarton, Scotland, to Catherine Marley, in 1895.

Although I can't locate any Irish records for Michael, I've done my DNA and have been linked with lots of distant relatives who have Peter and Rose, and their other children, on their trees.

The place names of Rossguill, Dunfanaghy, Clondahorky, Mevagh, Gleneraugh and Torvagh are listed for the family.

Ive also not had much luck in finding records for Peter Coyle and his wife, Rose Lynagh.

I would really appreciate help if anyone has ever seen records of Michael, or can offer any other help.

Many thanks, Clair Coyle

Your family lived in Glenieraragh townland in Mevagh civil parish. Here is a link to the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Mevagh civil parish and you can see Peter listed in Glenieraragh.  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/donegal/mevagh.htm

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and there was an index record for an October 13 1867 birth for a Shila Coyle with parents Peter Coyle and Rose Lynagh. Unfortunately, the RC records for Mevagh parish start in 1871. My guess is that Shila was the only child born after 1864 when civil registration started and the older children including Michael would not have an available baptismal record because the records started in 1871.

1901 census likely Peter was deceased but I did not find a death record    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Glen/Glenierar…

I did not see a death record for Rose but it appears she died between 1901-1911.

I went back a second time and searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and the 1911 census.

I located the civil birth record for Shila. There is an annotation on the left margin which corrects the informant's name from Owen brother of Shila to Peter the father.

In looking at the 1911 census, I found Rose living with Owen and his wife Rose in Glenieraragh.

    https:/www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Glen/Glenieraragh/504…

I found a Rose Coyle death record in Glenieraragh informant was Susan McBride niece age was shown as 68 which is a lot lower than 81 but that did happen at times

Unfortunately, the Rose Coyle who married Owen died in 1912

  • Michael’s marriage cert in 1895 tells us that his father Peter was a farmer, and that both Peter & Rose were dead then.  I found another Rose Coyle in Glenieraragh who died in 1891, so that fits with the 1895 marriage information. The informant was her son Peter.  So I have a suspicion there were 2 Peter Coyles married to 2 Roses.
