Hi after having a great response to my question on Catherine Fitzgerald, could you help with another
question. We are related to that side of the Fitzgerald family but through my great great grandfather Michael father of Michael who lived in Howardstown. Is there any records on who my great great grandfather married and what other children he had as one of them is my connection. Thank you to the volunteers who are doing an amazing job. AM

  • Hi,

In the marriage record for Michael Fitzgerald to Catherine Webb in 1882, his father is recorded as "Michael Fitzgerald - Pensioner".

It is unlikely that his father was a Pensioner in that period, unless he was a retired member of the British Army or RIC  (Police).

There was a Constable Fitzgerald in Limerick city in the 1870's. You should enquire from your distant relatives if they are aware of

    any connection to either service.

    Regards,

  • That  information is interesting as the Fitzgeralds ( including the Fitzgerald/Kennedy clan) all have their origins in Clogher, Athlacca. The townland of Howardstown is adjacent to the townland of Clogher this may be of interest to you or it may be just more useless information. Also interesting here is that the name Webb were in the area of Athlacca since the 1650's.

  • My ancestor was Michael Fitzgerald who married Mary Long in 1843.  I know nothing about where Michael came from but he settled in Croom. Any possibility theya re related?

  • Do you have anymore information on the early Webb's of Rathcannon in the parish of Athlacca please?   A survey of the old church in 1943 recorded a monument under the belfry to Daniel Webb of Rathcannon and his wife Anne. He died in 1701 aged 87 and Anne in 1700 aged 81. This monument does not appear to exist today. Daniel Webb was the grandfather of Daniel Webb the famous 18th century Art Critic who was born at Maidstown Castle nearby. This branch of the Webb family were recorded as having come from Gloucestershire originally but I would like to know exactly how they came to be settled in Rathcannon and when.

  • Hi There

I am in touch with some of the Gubbins family in South America and my understanding from them that Maidstone Castle was taken in 1652 by the Cromwellians and given to John Ormbsy who lived back what is now called the New Line in Athlacca. It appears that Joseph Gubbins another Cromwellion tried to purchase it from him but he refused to sell but some time later a Danial Webb was instrumental in saving his life and he made him a present of the Castle and 150 acres for life at a rent of £60 and there after Webb sold it to Joseph Gubbins.

  • Hi Rubert

Just an add on to the above --I was speaking to a local who lives in Rathcannon and he informed that on his land there is the remains of a habitation and the field is know as ''Webb's Field''. What surprises me that over the years the name Webb surfaces every now and again so it would appear that they have a connection to Atthlacca going back at least 200 years.
