I believe that my great-great grandfather Andrew McGrath was born in Moycullen around 1818 and that his father's name was Michael Magrath.  I do not have a mother's name.

 

Andrew lived his whole life in Salthill, Galway. He married Judith Hackett ( parents Michael Hackett and Catherine Carrol) circa 1850 in Rahoon parish and had six or seven children, including my great grandfather Michael, Nora, Catherine, all of whom emigrated to the US in the 1880s (PA and CT) and Delia, Patrick and Bridget, whose lives  I have no information on.

Andrew died 1883/84 in Rahoon parish.   His widow ended up going to Pennsylvania at some point and shows up in Old Forge, PA in 1900 living with her son Michael.  So far I have not found a death record for Judith McGrath in the US so I wonder if she returned to Ireland after 1900 to be with her other children.

 

I would like to confirm  the identities of Andrew McGrath's parents, if possible, and see if there are any living McGraths or Hacketts or Carrols connected to my lineage.

    You could check for baptismal records for Moycullen at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2441, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, 0926071. These date from 1786.

    You could also check the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com

    The Roman Catholic Church records for Rahoon date from 1819 and can be found at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2437, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, 0926069. You could try writing to the Parish Priest for information if you have any trouble.

    You could check to see if Judith is on the 1901/1911 census. This is freely available online.

    Hopefully someone in the local community will recognise the names and be able to offer you more information.
