Michael McDonagh born 1821 Kilcummen

There are three parishes recorded in Griffith's Land Valuations: Kilcummin, Killarney, Co. Kerry - Kilcummin - Killala, Co. Mayo and Kilcummin, Oughterard, Co. Galway. The spelling varies in records, likewise with McDonagh.

Subscription Site  www.rootsireland.ie has a record of a Michael McDonough being baptised in Kilcummin, Oughterard on April 2nd 1817. Father: Peter McDonough and Mother: Bridget Clancy.

Baptismal Sponsors: John Thomas and Bridget Mulloy - Address: Ard;

Michael McDonough - Baptism Kilcummin - Oughterard April 2nd 1819 (?). Father: James McDonough and Mother: Winifred King. Baptismal Sponsors: Thaddeus Toole and Mary McDonough. Address: Derraura (Possible - Derradda).

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you regarding the information you sent to me when I was on holiday in September 2023. 

The link you sent through for Catholic Parish Registers was very interesting to search, once I had set the light/dark/contrast etc to suite. I must admit though, I wasn't able to decypher all the handwriting. You did very well to read it & send me your findings. 

Since my last post I have found the date of Michael's burial, which was the 7th July 1856 & the record states his age as 36 yrs old, & not 35yrs as shown on his death certificate. His year of birth now will be 1820.  As there is uncertainty with birth year, I will keep an open mind & have decided to hold on to the 1819 baptism record you found for Michael with parents James & Winifred. Research to do on this family. 

I looked  at the Griffiths Land Valuations & found six different areas (apologies if that's not the correct term) with Kilcummin in them in Co. Galway. Letterfore, Carrowroe South/East Reen, Furnace Island, Carrowroe West, Aughnanure, & Spiddle West. As I have found no connection to Michael's family yet, I've not taken the search further. 

I recently came across the following information:-  Kilcummin in the Electoral Division of Cloonacool in the Parish of Anchonry, in the Barony of Leyny in the County of Sligo. The Irish name for Kilcummin is Cill Chuimin. Do you know if any of GLV  names above relate to the Co.of Sligo? 

My search continues for Michael. I do hope that one day I will find his family connection.

I have not found any connection of the "Michael McDonough" to Cloonacool.

I attach a transcription of the baptism of a Margaret McDonough in Kilcummin - Oughterard 1817. Her address: Derrouran.  

Connor McDonough baptised in1828. Baptismal Sponsors: Richard and Margaret McDonough. No address recorded. The name "Richard McDonough" is recorded in the area of Glann up to recent times. Derroura is in the area of Glann on the shores of Lough Corrib - Upper.

Oughterard Heritage has a record of a Bartholomew Stagpool who joined the British Army. His birthplace was recorded as "Kilcommen" near the town of Oughterard.

I have not found any record for a "James McDonough" in the townland of Derroura in the Tithe Records or Griffith's.
