Looking for my Great Grandfathers family. The family story is Jeremiah Cornelius O'Reardon was born in Boston, MA, July 15, 1871 while his mother (Bridget) was there on family business. His parents were John O'Reardon and Bridget (Kennedy) O'Reardon. John was and Policeman in Ireland and was killed in Ireland before Jeremiah was born. Bridget and Jeremiah at the age of 2 returned to Ireland and lived in the area somewhere between Limerick or Cork. Jeremiah returned to the US through the city of Boston lived with an Aunt whose history is unknown. He found his way to Detroit, MI where he became a blacksmith and later working at Ford Motor. He dropped the "O" from our last name shortly after getting married in 1893.

  • Hi:

I have checked Ancestry for a Massachusetts birth record and I have found a Jeremiah Reardon born to Jeremiah Reardon and Bridget (maiden name not listed) on 5 February 1869 where they resided at 298 Federal Street in Boston.  I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for.  I do see the Michigan death record that you refer to with the father's name as Cornelius and the different date of birth, so this record may not be the same family.

I have also gone on Roots Ireland to see if there is a marriage record for a Cornelius Reardon (as it is not clear to me if the name is correct) to a Bridget Kennedy.

There is one record in Cappamore parish county Limerick on 24 January 1870 between Cornelius Reardon and Bridget Kennedy.

The above is taken from the Cappamore  parish  church marriage register.  I cannot find the civil marriage record on the Irish Genealogy website.

If you are reasonably certain that Jeremiah's father's name was Cornelius, then it is worth looking for a death record for him.  I do not see one on the Irish Genealogy website, but it may exist.  Another option is to look through the Irish News Archives for a newspaper record for his death.  If he was a policeman, it would most likely have been mentioned.

Please feel free to add further information.

    All the best,

  • Jane:

In the past week I have been in contact with a relative I didn't know I had. He found my cousin who put me in contact with him.  According to his records Jeremiah's father's name was Cornelius and he was married to Bridget Kennedy in Cappamore Parish.  This coincides with what you found out.

He also informed me that Cornelius was a member of the RIC before his death.  Not exactly sure what the RIC is but maybe you could help me look into that.  Also Cornelius' father's name was John and he was also a member of the RIC.

We have this information about Jeremiah, is thre any way to get some information about Bridget Kennedy, we know nothing about her.

  • Hi Mike: the RIC is the Royal Irish Constabulary which was the Irish police force in Ireland before independence.  The RIC records are available online through FindMyPast, a subscription genealogy website.  In addition, Jim Herlihy is a noted Irish police historian who has written a number of books on them. If you don't have any access to FindMyPast, let me know directly and I will look for you. I'll also copy one of our volunteers who is familiar with RIC history.  You can contact me at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.
    All the best,

  • Hi Mike:

Yes, the FMP website is particularly good for Irish records.  If Bridget Kennedy married in Cappamore parish, she was most likely from there.  That is a good place to start.

If you need further help, please don't hesitate to ask.

    All the best,
