Good day:) I'm trying to find the birthplace, and parents of my Michael Tobin, who is a real brickwall:)

One of my cousins did an Ancestry DNA test, and was told her DNA showed kin from Kilkenney.

What does this really mean? I had guestimated my Tobins came from Tipperary or Cork. My grandfather told me the family sailed from Ireland from Cork. Don't know if direct, or possibly through Liverpool etc.

I have good records on family of his son: James Buchanan Tobin born in 1862, but have found little on Michael Tobin, or other children. Appreciate your comments, and advice. Thanks.

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

In case you did not see my response to your February 22nd message, here it is  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/message-board/michael-tobin-0

Ancestry DNA has a large pool of DNA results and can generally pinpoint where a person's ancestors came from in Ireland (or any country) by comparing the results to the DNA results in the pool. (This is a very generic answer and Ancestry can give you more details).

The subscription site Roots Ireland has an 1836 Michael Tobin baptismal record in the Callan RC parish. See below. There are also Michael Tobin records in other parishes around 1836. You will need other evidence you see if you can confirm the record below.

    Thanks, Roger

Definitely a possibility. Unfortunately, all I know is that my Michael Tobin came to the US as a boy( that's what my grandfather John M Tobin told me).

My cousin's Ancestry DNA names Kilkenney as a Tobin family match, but don't know how this helps me?

I have found loads of Michael Tobin references but can't pin point whether any are indeed my Michael Tobin since I do not know his parent's names, parish , County etc.

Any suggestions? I've hit the brick wall:(  All the best. Frank T

You want to try and find other people who have Tobin connections thru DNA testing. Is your cousin contacting his closest matches to see where he connects with them e.g paternal line or maternal and hopefully Tobin. You want to find someone who has more info on your Tobin line presumably in Co. Kilkenny. Your cousin could also add his DNA data to a site called Genesis Gedmatch www.genesis.gedmatch.com   This is a volunteer run site where you upload your DNA data and see matches with people who tested with other companies (and also loaded their data to Genesis Gedmatch).
