I've previously posted over the years but have not received any responses so shall try again.

My husband's great grandfather was John Minihan born about 1820. We've seen it spelled many ways so can't say for sure how the surname was spelled.

We have no documentation on where he was born other than Ireland. However based on dna matches we believe he was from the Limerick/north Tipperary area. I've searched many records but never know if I have the correct person. He named his first son Michael and second son James. Based on dna matches male relatives could have been Denis, William, Joseph, plus of course James, Michael and John. Those names appear in the family trees of many dna matches.

We hope to visit Ireland in September and plan to stay in Limerick and explore out from there. Are there any suggestions for us of ways other than records we might research for John or visit places he could have walked at one time?

Perhaps there is a local volunteer who could assist us? Thank you for any ideas you may have.

Kind regards,

Susan and Francis Minnehan

  • I looked for a John with father Michael and found the following. I can’t say for sure it is your ancestor, but then again, it may be.

    John Minihan born 07-Mar-1820
Baptized in RC parish of Newcastle West in Co. Limerick on 07-Mar-1821
    Parents: Michael Minihan, Margaret Cussen
    Sponsors: John O'Brien, Anne Minihan

This John’s siblings were baptized as follows:

    Minihan Mary 1816 Co. Limerick
    Minihan Michael 1818 Co. Limerick

    Minihan Eliz 1823 Co. Limerick
    Minihan Robert 1826 Co. Limerick
    Minihan Tim 1828 Co. Limerick
    Minihan Matthew 1831 Co. Limerick
    Minihan James 1835 Co. Limerick

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Thanks Patricia, I have seen those records and thought them a possibility. However it was suggested by a genealogist in Limerick that due to the distance between Newcastle West and the Limerick/Tipperary boarder this did not appear to be a logical match. As I said in my original post I've found several John Minihans but no idea if one of them is our John. Appreciate your assistance!
