Could the townland of Loughlahan be misinterpreted by an Englishman as Louvan / Louran - Back in 1823 my Irish G.G grandfather Patrick Crew/Carew/Crewe enlisted into the Army joining the 58th Foot Regiment Nov 1823 at Ballinasloe, County Galway, aged seventeen years old. (Born approx 1806).
Details of his birth place was listed on the 'Attestation for Regiments' as Louvan or could be Louran, County Tipperary. I can't tell if the written word has a 'v' or 'r' after the letter u. WO25/440 58 Foot 1822-1829 Image 51 of 289. (Crewe Patk)
A baptism for Patrick Carew Feb 1806, Father Thomas Carew and mother Anne (Flynn) in the District/Parish of Thurles. close by is Loughlahan. www.rootsireland.ie/:
In the Tithe applotment book for the Parish of Thurley, in the Townland Loughlahan a Thomas Carew occupied 12 acres of land in 1833.
As as there is not a townland or Parish with the name of Louvan or Louran in County Tipperary I was thinking Loughlahan could have been verbally misinterpreted by an English soldier filling out the forms.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

If the birth record is correct, and he was born in the RC parish of Thurles, then the town land cannot be Loran as that is further north in the RC parish of Courngareen (Bourney)...civil parish Bourney. There were five other children born to Thomas and Anne:
Mary, 1807; James, 1808, Bridget, 1811; Laurence, 1812; and Mary, 1815.
It is curious that Thomas is in the Tithe applotment records occupying 12 acres, but then there are no records in the Griffith's Valuation for any Carew in that townland. It must be a very small place because the 1901 & 1911 census for Loughlahan only show one family..the Bannon family there.

Margot: After his term of 23 years in the 58th Regiment he married in Co Cavan. The family moved to NZ in 1849.

Carolyn: Thank you for the list of further children born to Thomas and Anne. I am focusing on these Carew parents at this stage as my Patrick's date is the same year as the Patrick baptised in Thurles. I haven't found a better option in Co Tipperary. Where did you get the information of the other children born to Thomas and Anne? When my Patrick married in 1843 his religion was listed as Roman Catholic. Unfortunately parents names were not listed on any records for Patrick, at least records that I have found.

I found those other children on the paid site Roots Ireland. (www.rootsireland.ie). The only additional information that I can provide you in those records are the sponsor's names for the baptism of their children, and their exact baptism dates....let me know if you would like that.

I am looking at WO 25/440 The page on Ancestry is 46. Patrick joined in Birr, County Offaly. At that time it would have been Kings County.
Crinkle is the Army place where he would have been.
The place on the map that I gave as Loran is south of Birr.
There is another Army place nearer to Loran in Templemore.
I see on the discharge record it was 1845. Is this correct?
Have you got his Army records?
I could do with seeing these.

Margot: I do have copies of his Army records but they are not good clear copies. FMP has 6 articles in 'British Army Service Records' for Patrick/Patk CREWE. I'm sure these are the records I have but would not be worthwhile forwarding them on due to the darkness of them. Currently I don't have a subscription with FMP.
