Does anyone know where to find out more about the William George Molloy estates of Ballyfermoyle please.

This is all I have...

HANSARD 1803–20051900s 1907 August 1907 7 August 1907 Commons Sitting

William George Molloy Estate, County Roscommon.

HC Deb 07 August 1907 vol 180 cc85-6

MR. JAMES O'KELLY (Roscommon, N.) I bog to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if the estate of William George Molloy at Ballyfermoyle, county Roscommon, has been sold to the tenants; whether an inspection has been made of lands owned by John Molloy; and whether it is intended to provide land for the three evicted tenants from the William George Molloy estate on the lands owned by John Molloy.

MR. CHERRY NO proceedings for the sale of this estate have yet been, instituted before the Estates Commissioners. When their inspector was making local inquiries as regards the evicted tenants on the estate he visited the holding which John Molloy occupies as tenant, but the question of acquiring that holding has not been considered by the Commissioners, seeing that the estate-is not pending for sale before them.

  • Ballyformoyle in Co. Roscommon is townland in vicinity of Keadue. It formed part of the Kilronan Estate, as far as I can ascertain and is in the civil parish of Ardcarne in the Barony of Boyle. It spans an area of 1.14 square miles (727 acres).

At the time of the 1901 census, Ballyformoyle was divided into 28 separate plots of land and rented to the following tenants: Jennings, Gallagher, Benson, Priest, Quinn, Gray, Holland, Healy, Gilheaney, Malone, Gaffney, Keenan, Gormley, Flanagan, McDermott, Tevinan, Molloy, Farell, Callaghan, Hanratty, Martin, Simons, Connolly and Shanley.

John Molloy is mentioned in your extract. In the 1901 Census, a John Molloy (40) was living in Ballyformoyle with his wife Mary (38) and a visitor, Bridget Farrell (42).

Earlier, at the time of the Griffiths Valuation (1847-64), Ballyformoyle was held by Fanny Molloy. It was leased to James, Patrick and Charles McGreavy and the 727 acres, plus buildings and offices rented to them for £167 / 5 shillings p.a.

That's about as much as I can find at the moment based on the scant information supplied. Did you have a specific reason for asking, or someone you were trying to trace?

  • Thank you KC.

My great great grandmother was Catherine Mulloy (c1820s-11906) married Laurence O'Hara at Ardcarne 1847. Via DNA I've traced probable siblings (/1st cousins?) incl John Mulloy of Aghrafinigan (1822-1909) and James Mulloy of Cloonkeen (c1819-1901). Although I don't know why they wouldn't be in the same general area?

I've now come up with more distant matches to descendants of Michael Mulloy (c1784-1855) m Catherine Carty . Michael was from Ballyfermoyle. In Michael's son John's will (1895), John mentions land belonging to W.G. Mulloy and land belonging to Neddy Mulloy. This is most likely the John Mulloy mentioned in the extract above.

    So my initial queries were...

How did the Ballyfermoyle Mulloys relate to the Oakport Mulloys,

Was this W.G.Mulloy the same person as William Mulloy of Oakport,

    Who was Neddy Mulloy,

And how to tie my Catherine Mulloy O'Hara in with either/both Ballyfermoyle & Oakport?

I have not investigated William of Oakport's descendants to see if there are DNA matches... sometimes Ancestry UK is quite random in its selection!

That's where I'm at. As an aside.... Various DNA relatives have put Catherine's parents as Charles Mulloy  m Mary Kate McLoughlin of Knockvicar but offer no proof or records as to who this Mary Kate is. A Charles Mulloy did marry an Honoria McLoughlin Boyle 1817, and a Charles & Honria Mulloy did reside in Aghrafinigan. Further clouds the issue. Again I have not found any McLoughlin DNA relatives.

    Thank you.
