Hello - I am visiting in 2 weeks from the US and am in search of my great-great grandfather's birth home and any possible records of his birth. I know his grandfather and parents' names, and their supposed location, but am stuck not finding official documentation (as our family has passed this info down).
Peter Moran of Leitrim had a son John Moran who married Ann Doran in the early 1830s.
John managed an "estate" (farm) at Aughacushlaun, near Drumshambo. Barony of Leitrim, Parish of Kilttubbrid.
They had 6 children:
- William Marcellian Moran - b 6/29/1837. (My great great grandfather).
- Matthew C
- Elizabeth b. 8/15/1841 in Edinburgh. The family must have left the area around this time.
- Michael
- Ellen
- Mary Ann
Another relative writes that the location is Aughaslane, NW of Drumshambo. However Aughacushlaun is NE of Drumshambo. I've searched Griffith's and am not able to find records of my family in Aughacushlaun, but did find the location.
One distant relative wrote in the 1980s that he had possession of certified documents stating that Wm M Moran was born at Aughacashlaun. I have yet to find these documents and hope that someone may help.

The RC records for Kiltubbrid RC parish start in 1847 which appears to be after your Moran family left Ireland. Also, civil registration of births did not start in Ireland until 1864. The townland is Aghacashlaun in Kiltubbrid civil parish.
Aghacashlaun is 5.2 miles east of Drumshanbo.

The tithe applotment records for Aghacashlaun in 1833 list a Michael Moran & a Francis Moran farming there. Griffiths Valuation in 1856 lists a Bridget Moran farming plot 6a – 11 acres. She was likely a widow.

1851 Scottish census which I think relates to your family. Shows children Mary 14, William 12, Biddy (ie Bridget) 10 & Michael 7, all born Ireland. Mathew 5 and Helen 3 born in Edinburgh. So family seem to have moved to Scotland around 1845.

Yes, that is the family in Scotland. It does look as if they left around 1845.
I very much appreciate your help. I don't have a name for Peter's wife, and my only guess is that perhaps Bridget Moran could have been John's mother. I can't imagine he would have left her behind to move to Scotland, though. It seems I may have met a roadblock here.

Hi Ashley, I'm an ancestor of both Peter and John Moran - from the Edinburgh Scotland branch : } I'm researching my ancestors also, and came across your post. I believe Peter Moran's wife was Jane Flynn, they married in Edinburgh in 1860 and she is also listed a coming from Leitrim - though realise that this date is quite a bit later than you have him coming to Scotland.
