Hello. My grandfather was Edward Griffin. He came from Fanad in Donegal.
He married and settled in Glasgow and died in 1944. Before I was born. I can't find him. His marriage certificate says his father was Daniel and mother Rose nee Gallagher. However one interesting entry in the 1901 census has a family living in upper Carlan, Carrowkeel. Still there in 1911 minus Edward who would have possibly moved to Scotland by then. But mother's name is Giley. Birth dates are all over the place between 1901/ 1911.
As a little boy I visited Ireland with my grandmother. We stayed on a farm in Donegal with a lady called Begley. I think she might have been my grandfather's sister. Had three chidren. Neil. Sheila and Fanny. Would dearly love to find that farm again before I die. Any help or advice appreciated. I live in London.

I think the explanation as to why the Carlan family doesn’t fit right is that Edward’s mother had died, and father Daniel had remarried.
Here’s a Rose Griffin born 1887 to Daniel & Rose:
John in 1889:
So that leads to this family in 1901:

And in 1911:

Daniel’s wife in 1906 is named as Sheila McCarron, so this was a second marriage:
First wife Rose’s death in 1892:
Daniel’s second marriage in 1894:

I looked for a Griffin – Begley marriage but did not see one.
There’s an Edward Griffin aged 25 in Coatbridge in the 1911 census. Aged 25, single, railway platelayer, born Ireland. Don’t know if that’s your man. GROS ref 652/2 15/8. Lodging with other railway labourers from Ireland in Coats St.

I posted my details more in hope than anything else and am absolutely amazed and delighted at the responses. Thank you very much to all of you who posted. It will take me a little while to investigate further but I will be sure to post the results. It just never occurred to me that Daniel had married again. This has made finding more information easier and more likely. Am excited at the prospect. Thank you all again. I am very grateful.

Hi Edward, I have just found this post as I was searching my ancestry. My grandmother was Rose Griffin, your grandfather’s sister. Daniel Griffin and Rose Gallagher were her parents. Rose married John McCoach and immigrated to New Zealand in 1926. Their children were Hugh and Rosemary McCoach. I am Rosemary’s daughter, living in New Zealand. Would love you to contact me. Do you have an email address? Regards Erin Foster
