  • Dear Jackie, was the Edward Costello you are looking for born around 1788 in Mountmellick. Was a soldier, married to Charlotte Huntley, and died in London in 1869? If so I can help. Pls reply here and I will give further contact details. Diana Oppé.

  • Jackie, thanks for a quick reply. My husband is a direct descendant of Edward Costello and I have quite a detailed family tree on Ancestry. Do you have access to that site? I am looking for ways of putting the family tree on the internet but this may take a while. Our branch of the family moved to London and stayed thereabouts. My husbands grandmother was Florence Martha Costello, daughter of Henry de Lacy Costello, son of John Francis who was Edward’s son. Do contact me directly, dioppe@aol.com if you wish. I do not have much further information about the Irish Costello’s other than Edward, about whom there is a lot written. We live in London but have a house in Kerry. We are planning to visit Mountmellick in the next week or so...watch this space. Best wishes, Diana.

  • Jackie, having spent time in Mountmellick and Port Laois, I have been unable to trace any records for Costello’s. The name is not common in the area. I think that Edward’s family may have come from Mayo, and moved on to Dublin by the late 1700s where his father was a cabinet maker. I have no other names. The origin of Costello is probably Norman, coming to Ireland via Viking Wales. If you are a direct descendant of Edward I can help. If not, back to the drawing board. Regards, Diana.
