Hello all

I'm trying to find out more about my Murphy family.  I really didn't have much to go on before.  My relative, Patrick Murphy, ended up in Cardiff, Wales around the famine years.  He met another Irish refugee there, Bridget Hankard, and they married and lived in an area of Cardiff known as "little Ireland".  Bridget was from Co. Cork.

I know from Patrick's marriage certificate that his father was called... Patrick Murphy.  I know it's a bit of a needle in a haystack and I did have a moment of hitting my head off the desk when the marriage certificate arrived, I was hoping for a nice obscure name that would make it easier to trace him!

On the Welsh census records, Patrick junior was born around 1830 but only lists "Ireland" as to where he was from.

My father and I have both taken the Ancestry DNA test.  I've found a couple of Murphy cousins who both link back to Ballinskelligs and have O'Connell relatives.  Their shared relation is a James Murphy who they have born in Kerry around 1800.  They're listed as 4th-6th cousins of my father's so I'm wondering if James Murphy and Patrick Murphy senior may have been brothers?

I don't know if there's anyone that might have more of an idea about the family.  I have our DNA on GEDMatch if there are any potential Murphy relations that have taken the test and want to compare.

Thanks so much in advance.

  • Hello Roger

Thank you very much!  Or is that "go raibh maith agat" :)

I know it's a bit of a tricky request with such common names.  Never thought I'd have the information I have now, thank goodness for DNA :)

    Thanks again

  • Hello, Aine, I recently discovered through DNA testing that my GG Grandmother Murphy's family originated in the north Ballinskellig area. My DNA results are on Ancestry.com. Do you know if there is a way for us to compare our results even though we tested through different companies?

  • Hello your ancestors xame from the same area mine are from. My Great Grandfather Jeramiah Murphy was born in Bunkskellig in cork. He married Ellen (Nellie Lowney) in Butte Montana. Her mother’s maiden name was Ellen Murphy. i have some more that we recieved from a relative Con Murphy in Ireland that I am still putting together. I will see if any of the names are in it. If nothing else try putting there names in and see if you find a connection. Dna test does really bring a lot out. I couldn’t find anything on Jeramiah Murphy until I got my results.
