Hi I am looking for any info on the Murray family from Carrick. My great grandfather was Tomothy Murray who in 1901 was a draper in Carrick on Shannon
I am visiting soon and would love to find out more

  • Hello and welcome to Ireland Reaching out.

Sorry, I am only seeing your message now.

I have searched an old map of Carrick on Shannon - 1850 - and there is one John Murray who lived on the 'Leitrim Road' in the town.

It does not say if he is a merchant or a private house, but most houses on the Leitrim Road at that time were private houses.

I looked at the 1901 Census and Timothy and Janie are both from County Roscommon, do you know what part of Roscommon.  They might have come to live in Carrick.  Now Roscommon touches Leitrim at the bridge in Carrick, so they might not have travelled too far.

Have you any more information on Timothy.

I also looked at the1911 Irish Census for Carrick and Timothy is now a 'Commercial Traveller'

Jane McManus married Timothy Murray in Kilronan, Roscommon, on 15 June 1886 when she was 25 years old.  This Jane was born in 1886 in Keadue Co Roscommon.  Keadue is about 15km from Carrick on Shannon

I did find Timothy in 1908 in a Court session where he was unable to pay his rent

When are you planning to visit Carrick, I will try to find out more information for you

  • Hi Geraldine
Thank you so much for all the wonderful information and such a quick reply.
To go back further I guess I will have to try Roscommon reaching out.
Do you think they are likely to have been buried in Keadue too or in Carrick?
    Coming to visit mid Feb

    Again thank you so much!!
