Hello-
My great-great grandmother Bridget "Della" Neary Durkin is from Breaffy in Co. Mayo. She had many siblings, (Daniel Neary, Thomas Neary, John Neary, Catherine Neary, Mary Neary, Anna Neary). Their parents were Jacobus Neary and Brigida Connell. We know Jacobus went by James and Brigida went by Bridget and they were married in 1878 in Co. Mayo Ireland. Most of the children left Ireland and went to Philadelphia but it looks like a few may have stayed. Thomas Neary stayed and after he died, the family farm in Breaffy was sold in September of 1975 to a Michael and Betty Thornton who live(d) in Attymass. I'm looking to see if any Neary relatives still exist or if anyone knows the address of the farm that was sold.

Regarding the names Jacobus and Brigida, you say the couple “went by James and Bridget”. Jacobus is Latin for James and Brigida is Latin for Bridget (or cod Latin really since there is no Latin word for that name). So they were christened and known to their family as James & Bridget. It is the priest who has translated those names into Latin, and you won’t find any other reference to those versions outside parish registers. Latin was the language used by the church, and so many parish registers are compiled in that language.

My great, great grandparents were Thomas , and Catherine Kelaher Neary from Ballindoo/Doocastle, Count Mayo. One of their sons, John Neary was born around 1840 or 42 and emigrated to New York City where he married in 1879. Could that be same family? Roberta Neary
