Hi everyone, I am seeking research help for one of my direct paternal ancestors, James Coyle.

My great grandfather, Patrick T. Coyle (1902-1992) immigrated to New York with his brother John J. Coyle (1894-?) from Raphoe in 1929. Their parents were: Edward Coyle (1869-1950), and Ellen McCool (1865-1942).

Edward Coyle's parents were James Coyle and Anne Coyle (DOB/death dates assumed from likely documents). Now here is where I've lost my marbles - both James Coyle and Anne Coyle had a father James Coyle. Both laborers. I think there are 3 possible scenarios here:
- Two different James Coyles.
- They were siblings.
- The marriage document is wrong.

Unfortunately, I can't find any further details. The only hint I have, is according to the notes on the RootsIreland marriage record for Edward and Ellen McCool, Edward's father is from Glasgow. Besides that, I am not sure what to look for, and I feel uncertain about any possible records. Any tips?

  • James Coyle’s 1866 marriage to Anne Coyle here:

Both fathers are shown as James Coyle. They will be 2 different James Coyles. No way is a priest going to marry a brother and  sister and since the information came from bride and groom, they are usually likely to know their own parents names accurately.

James Coyle is a very common name in that area. In the 1901 census of Donegal there were 66 people with that name.

The Glasgow connection is not unusual. Tens of thousands of folk from Donegal went to Glasgow for work. So Edward's father may well have lived in Scotland (or have been born there) but the family probably originated in Donegal. Scottish marriage and  death certificates contain more information than Irish ones and so if James died or married in Scotland you should get both parents names, whether they were still alive etc. Scottish birth certificates also normally record where and when the parents married.

  • Hi, thank you very much for the help!

Yeah, it's been difficult with so many people having the same name, including the same names for their children, parents, siblings, etc. I've just started doing this last year so I am still relatively new to it. According to my DNA estimates, I don't have *any* Scottish DNA (which is still quite surprising) but as far as DNA matches go, not a whole lot of info on my direct ancestors. I will certainly try to start looking through Scottish records, but if there was already an Irish marriage record, or perhaps Irish birth records, I'm not sure I will find Scottish ones (but I don't know). I also have not found any other children of James and Anne, so far, but I assume there must be others.
