Hello All
My g grandparents Nicholas Flanagan & Rose Igo lived in Kilkenny West. They were married in Tubberclaire in October 1831 and I have baptism records for their 6 children: Catherine 1832, Denis 1836, Judith 1839, Marcella 1841, Edward 1847 and (my grandfather) William 1852. Using RootsIreland and Family Search I have been able to find the marriages and children of Judith (aka Julia) and Marcella. I have the death certificates for Nicholas Flanagan and his daughter Julia (married name Shiels).
My grandfather came to Australia on his own and never told much about his life in Ireland. I can find no record of Denis after 1853 and no record at all of Catherine and Edward. I do not know if they died young or perhaps emigrated to America, and I would be happy for any suggestions.
Parish records for Tubberclaire commence in 1829. Prior to this date where will I find church records for the people of Kilkenny West?
Thanking you,
Clare in Victoria, Aus

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
There are no available church records for Tubberclaire parish prior to 1829.
I did check the 1823 Tithe listings for Kilkenny West civil parish.I did not expect to find Nicholas but there were three Flanagan records and possibly one of the three was the father of Nicholas.

Clare,
I note a Dennis Igoe at what is now probably Farranamoneen, Glasson, Athlone, Co Westmeath on the Tithe Applotments - he may be Rose's father or brother given that her son is also Denis.
There are still Igoe families living in this area as I often heard my late mother talking about neighbours - she grew up at Tonagh, Tubberclair which is nearby. I recall my late Uncle mentioned Flanagan's meadow as the name of one of the fields on their farm. He said their had been a house in the field at one time. My mother's family moved to Tonagh around 1854.

Thank you Roger and John for your replies.
Yes, I am aware of the Flanagans on the Tithe Applotment books and I suspect that the Edward is either an older brother or father to my Nicholas. Edward Flanagan had lot 12 in Kilkenny West, He had a son William who married Anne Seavers and they had a son James. This James was the sole executor of the will of Nicholas Flanagan when he died in 1894, which suggests a fairly trusting family relationship. This Flanagan land is now in the hands of the O'Hara family, who we were priveleged to meet when we visited in 2011. After returning home I received the records from the Valuation Office which showed the land that Nicholas held - lot 21- was just over the road from where we had been. The house on lot 21 is long gone, and I gather that this land has been incorporated into a larger holding. I was hoping that I could maybe go back just one more generation in the records to be able to make that link between Nicholas and Edward, as these are both names that were given to my father.
Like you John, I have always wondered if Denis Igoe was related to Rose. The only sibling that I am sure of, to date, is a sister Margaret Igoe. There were a number of Flanagan families in the district in the early 1800s, and I am still trying to work out the relationships, but I have reason to believe that my Nicholas had a sister Anne and brothers Thomas, William and Owen, and perhaps an Edward.
Thanks again for your input,
Clare

Good morning Clare, I am following your correspondence with great interest as my ancestor, Christopher J.K. Flanagan is reported to have been born in "Castle Dunagh", Kilkenny. His father was Matthew Flanagan and his mother Elizabeth Mary Anne Coyne. A common name we have is Marcella. I also have a Flanagan friend who lives in Stuben County, New York State USA who has a Marcella in her family tree. Her ancestor was Daniel Flanagan.
Kind regards
