I am looking for information on my 3 great grandfather, Charles Nugent. I was told he may have come from Donegal. He may have ended up in Clare or Nenagh. I believe his son James, at least, was born in Nenagh.

Charles was born circa 1800. Is there a way I can find out if he died before his family immigrated through Scotland to the US? or if he was in a Poorhouse somewhere?

Thank you,

In the mid-19th century, the surname Nugent was found in almost every county in Ireland. There were very few Nugent households in Co. Donegal.

I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the only James Nugent baptismal record with father Charles was a November 1 1832 record at the Youghal RC parish in Co. Cork. The mother was shown as Mary with no maiden name.

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. Before 1864 a few churches (Youghal did not) maintained death information but snce we don't know where he lived, there is no way to look for a record.

Have you tested your DNA? Possibly thru close matches you may get better info on where your Nugents were from.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for responding so quickly!

My James Nugent was born October 8th, 1936. I was given the name of the town ,Nenagh, by a distant cousin who is directly decended from James' brother. I do not know where she got that info. My brother also mentioned he was told Donegal. Not sure where that came from either.

James' mother was Anna McCarthy (1804-1870) Born in Ireland and died in Wilson,New York. I did find a document on Scotlandspeople that says they lived in Ayton,Scotland before coming to the US., in 1855. It just lists Ireland as their home land. No town. This is what makes me think Charles died before that, maybe during the famine? or a war? or stayed behind for some reason.

I do appreciate your help. I will not quit until I feel my resources have been exhausted.

    Thank you again,

  • I meant 1836, not 1936. he died in 1926.

I looked again and used McCarthy for the mother's maiden name and no success. Finding church records in Co. Donegal is almost impossible.

Nenagh parish has baptismal records back to the late 1700s and but there is a gap between 1809 and 1830.
