Hi, I'm looking for an O'Brien family in Co. Mayo. Probably in the Castlebar area, Parish of Turlough or Aglish.
Charles O'Brien b:abt 1782 children James O'Brien b:1804 (possibly a soldier) John O'Brien b:1809 other siblings unknown. Children of James O'Brien & Ellinor McDonough are Charles b:1827 and Ann b:1828 (married a soldier). Family are Church of Ireland.
My interest in particular is a John O'Brien who emigrated to New Zealand from England in 1839/40.
I am a DNA match to the descendants of James O'Brien but I can't find a family that includes John (my 2x Gt Grandfather)
Any help or guidance greatly appreciated
Brian

Brian:
The subscription site Roots Ireland has Turlough Church of Ireland records back to 1821. I did not find any O'Brien baptismal records in that parish. I did find the baptismal records for Charles and Ann in the Kilmoremoy (Ballina) Church of Ireland parish. Charles was born January 17 1827 and baptized January 21 .parents James and Ellen O'Brien. Anne was born January 22 1828 and baptized January 27 parents James and Elinor O'Brien.
There is a March 17 1814 baptismal record for an Ann O'Brien father John O'Brien and mother Jane (no last name). This record was in the Oughaval (Westport) Church of Ireland parish. There was also an unnamed O'Brien child born June 1 1811 in the Crossmolina Church of Ireland parish father John O'Brien and mother Bridget O'Brien.

Hi Roger,
Thankyou for taking the time to do this research, I appreciate it. John's origins have proven very difficult to pin down, and thus far there is only the DNA connection to Anne's family to go on. Anne & her soldier husband also came to NZ as part of the British Army contingent (65th Regiment) and her husband took his discharge here. Nothing in their family history or anecdotes suggests that Anne's father James had a brother John, or other siblings for that matter, so that is pretty much a blank from this end.
I'm hoping for either a DNA breakthrough, or that someone will have done their (matching) family tree from the Ireland end and we can meet in the middle somewhere!
Thanks again
Brian

Hi, I have just last Friday had a breakthrough!! from another source that confirms that my 2x Gt Grandfather John emigrated via England arriving January 1840 in New Zealand. From this & a DNA match I now know that the family I am looking for is John 1809, James 1804, & possibly Mary 1806 O'Brien/O'Brian children of Charles O'Brien & ? (born abt 1785) in Co. Mayo. Parishes from the records I have are Turlough/Ballina, Kilmoremoy, and/or Aglish/Castlebar. Families associated by marriage are McDonaugh and O'Neill.
Any help or pointers very much appreciated.
Thankyou
Brian

Hi Brian,
I have been digging through ancestry.com and got stuck at John O'Brien and found a Marriage certificate with his fathers name Charles...
I thought I would google some of the details and this thread came up...
This is a bit of a long shot but might be us.
I'm James O'Brien from New Zealand and have tracked my ancestry back to John O'Brien apparently born 1808 or 1809 and he emmigrated to NZ.
His father was Charles O'Brien from what I could see on a Marriage Certificate.
From records, this John Married in New Zealand and I think to be my 3rd Great Grandfather.
From the attached image, you can see he married a New Zealand Maori woman, Metapere Kawhe.
Their son was Tiaki O'Brien
One of Tiaki's sons was Richard Thomas O'Brien (Picture attached)
Richard is my Great Grandfather.

Hi there,
I've been trying to find the family of my 3rd great-grandfather Charles F. O'Brien. This information is the closest I think I've found, but I'm still hitting a dead-end on a lot of facts. Here is what I know:
Charles was born in Ireland in 1827 and arrived in the U.S in 1847.
He had a son - Charles James O'Brien in New Orleans, LA in 1865. I believe the mother's name was Mary Shields O'Brien.
He had a daughter - LaVici/Vicie/ O'Brien in Mississippi in 1872. The mother is unknown at this time.
Of all the information I've checked out, the only connection that makes sense is the connection to this family because:
1. It would explain why he named his son Charles "James" (possibly after his father)
2. It might also explain the story I found on another message board (link below) for research related to Ann O'Brien "the only clue to her family was a photograph with the name Charles O"Brien on the back taken by a photographer in Cork."
Any help would be very much appreciated. I've been working on this for months now.
