My gmother, Annie O'Brien, was born in Clonfert, 18 Jan 1879. Parents were Mary Cunningham and Dan O'Brien, married 05 June 1876 in High Street Chapel, Banagher. Sponsors were John Mullin and Kate Rourke. Their eldest daughter, Mary, also born in Clonfert 21 April, 1877, married James Ryan, 14 Jul 1901 in Banagher and remained in Clonfert. I know decendants still live there. Catherine O'Brien (Katie) was born 20 Oct, 1880 in Brackloon. She emigrated to New York. No dates of her emigration or death. Bridget O'Brien was born 1886 or 1887, emigrated to New York in 1904 to join Kate. The manifest of SS Oceanic from Queenstown to Ellis Island shows her last residence as Banagher. The next line in the manifest records passenger, Denis Horan, aged 22, last residence Banagher, travelling to his sister, Sarah Horan c/o Miss A. Nichols, Babylon, Long Island. There appears to be connections here to previous posts. Bridget married Martin Waters in 1920 and died New York, 1957. I'm searching for information on the Dan O'Brien and Mary Cunningham families. The 1901 Census of Banagher, taken in March, records the widowed Mary to be living next-door to my grandparents, Annie and Michael Coolahan. Mary, Kate and Bridget lived with her. I believe Dan O'Brien died before my grandparents were married in 1899.

  • Hi there,

Have you checked the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for Mary and Dan?

You at least have an idea of where they were from, so it would be worth checking marriage records for more information about them and their parents. You could try checking the General Register Office (GRO) or the National Library of Ireland or the Church of Latter Day Saints for this.

Hopefully someone living in the locality will recognise the names and can help you further.

    Kind regards,
