I'm looking for info re my 'O'Brien's - namely John O'Brien (b-?) who married Mary O'Leary(b-?) c1828 in Dunmanway area.

My g/grandad John (aka 'George') was was born 1829 in Dunmanway.

Another 'John' was born 1832 in Annakissy (probably named John (again) because g/grandad was aka 'George')

Siblings Michael b1831 Bandon....Julia Brien b 1832 Killavullen and James b1835 Milford.

It has been suggested this family were 'vagrants'.  They eventually settled in London (c1845+) (?) -as g/grandad 'George' Brien/Bryan joined HEIC in London 1853 ....and appears on 1881+ censuses in Woolwich.  (have yet to trace others).  Any info would be great ... also for O'Leary's (a Conor & Ellen Leary mentioned as Sponsers)

Thanks - Valerie (WAus)

  • Hi Valerie

I found the baptism of John O'Brien aka George and on his baptism record is as address mentioned VAGUS meaning gypsy, traveller or tinker folk

John was baptised on 2 December 1829 in Dunmanway parish, parents John O'Brien and  Mary Leary, sponsor was Ellen McCarthy and

Sister Julia was baptised 24 June 1832 in Killavullen sponsors Connor O'Leary and Ellen O'Leary , also a son James baptised 30 Sep 1835 in Milford, sponsor James O'Leary and Margaret O'Brien

Sponsors were often siblings of the bride and/or groom. Unfortunately I was not able to locate a marriage record for John and Mary O'Leary

  • Thank you Anne Marie ...much appreciated.

Are you able to check for another sibling please...Michael Brien bc1832 BANDON? (same parents John & Mary Brien (nee Leary)

I learnt of him purely because his dau Mary Ann Brien appears as '20yr niece visitor' b1860 Gravesend - at  'George's home in Lambeth 1881.

I found HER parents Michael & Ellen Brien  ( b Bandon)  and their dau Mary Ann Bryan b1861 Gravesend..  on 1861 census

  •   Valerie Anne Marie ... is it possible for you to check whether another researcher has links with mine please??  Maureen  has  these gg/parents:

Jeremiah Brien & Catherine Brien (nee Sheehan) married c1838 in Dromaleague/Drimoleage/Dunmanway/Bandon areas (same as mine)

    chn: 1839 Margaret..... 1840 HenryPatk .... 1842 Bridget (Eliza) ......1844 Catherine (Caroline) ....  1846 Michael 1850 Jeremiah ....1852 John

Why I'm asking is that MY John & Mary Brien appear as 'Sponsers' (think on Bridget's baptism)....    I'm wondering if we have a link!!        (both our  Brien families moved to England c1850's  -we're trying to establish a link between her 'Glos'  rellies & my 'London' ones!
