Hello!

I am brand new to this site and forum and hoping to find some help.

I have found my Great-Grandfather Daniel O'Connell, along with his parents (Daniel - Brigid Kent) in the civil register for Shanagolden in 1866 (I have also found his brothers and sisters, and the death record of Brigid Kent O'Connell in died in 1876.

I am on a quest to learn more about their lives, where they lived etc, and would liek to come to Ireland for a visit. The records indicate that my 2 times Great-Grandfather-Daniel O'Connell- was a baker in Shanagolden. My Great-Grandfather had many brothers and sisters and although he emigrated to the U.S. around 1891, I imagine some of them remained and I would love to meet their descendents.

Any ideas on how I can pursue this are greatly appreciated!

Wendy

  • Hi Wendy,
You say Daniel has brothers and sisters, do you know their names?

The death you have for Bridget Kent O'Connel 1876, can you add the link, I can't find it.
    Thanks

  • Hi Margot,

Thanks for the reply. I spent one very cool day going through parish registers and finding all the brothers and sisters. Here's what I found:

    Name, Parish Book, Birthdate

    Mary, 02418/04 Page 84, 1854 April 19

    Helen, (Sponsor Patk O’Connell), 02418/04 Page 93, 1855 Oct 4

    Michael, 02418/04 Page 103. 1857 Jul 10

    Catherine, 02418/04 Page 107, 1858 Sep 28

    John, 02418/04 Page 114, 1860 Mar 7

    Patrick, 02418/04 Page 122, 1862 Apr 29

    Bridget, 02419/01 Page 10, 1864 Apr

    Daniel, 02419/01 Page 19,1866 May 26

    James, 02419/01 Page 34, 1868 Dec

    Margaret, 02419/01 Page 52, 1871 Dec 17

I am guessing that some of the sponsors were likely siblings of Daniel O'Connell senior. These are Patrick O'Connell, Mary O'Connell, and Michael O'Connell.

And, their mother Bridget Kent O'Connell died on Jan 14 1876. when my great-grandfather was only 9 years old. I want to learn what happened to all of these children after she died.

Thank you for any help! I am planning on a visit to Shanagolden this summer just to honor them. ;-)

  • Hi Margot,

I realized you asked for a link to the death record of Bridget Kent O'Connell. Here it is: http://limerick.rootsireland.ie/view_detail.php?recordid=3283478&type=d…

I also have a copy of it (as my subscription to the site expired).

It mentions David O'Connell, and I am not sure who that is yet. Could be an error (Daniel?). I do believe this is her though because, really, how many O'Connell bakers where there in Glin with a wife named Bridget?!

Thanks for any information you can provide about any living relatives in the area.

  • Hi Wendy, thanks for the records a great help.

This is Margaret's CIVIL birth record.
    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

I agree that David is Daniel, looking at Margaret's record it could be either, but it says father.

I have checked these to see if any names are listed, sorry they are not.  When you visit, you would need to visit them, to see if you can find any.

    Graveyards in Glin.

This is where to look next.  (my PC keeps freezing too many using the site today)

I know it's a slow process but it does state the fathers occupation.

My fathers family cane from Glin then moved to Shanagolden in the 1850's.

    I hope this has helped.

  • Hi Margot,

I was thinking about how you said your father's family came from Glin and moved to Shanagolden. I get confused about whether I should be looking in Glin, or Shanagolde, or both. The records say, District of Shanagolden, Union of Glin. Does that mean they lived in Glin?

Hi Wendy.   My name is Dan O'Connell.   I live in Colorado.  I also am new to the geneology world.  I have trace my O'Connell family back through my Grandrather Francis, born in the U S in 1889, Michael my great grandfather born in Ireland in 1847,  My 2nd great grandfather Patrick born in Ireland in 1827.  This Patrick was marrie to Anne Reddin.  I know they came from the Limerick Shanagolden area.  I am going to Ireland in September and will be visiting Shanagolden.  I hope to see the cemetery, and would love it I could meet some distant relatives.

No, looking at the civil birth records where it shows the date of birth underneath it states where they lived.......Shanagolden so they must have lived in the village.
The townlands are always stated, so they were in Shanagolden.
    A bit of History.........

If and when you every go to Ireland as you drive through the roads, your SatNav will show all the townland names, they are the same as your Streets/Roads. They are not on sign posts.
    I hope this helps

  • HI Daniel,

I did not see this message until just now. So sorry.

I would love to compare records with you. I am at a brick wall with my O'Connells. ;-)

If you are interested, could you email me at wendy@wendybrunner.com?

Meanwhile, I will compare the names an dates you provided. Maybe we are related or at least perhaps we can help each other find our Irish cousins!

  • Hi Again Daniel,

I couldn't wait to find the connection. It does look like we share a 3xgreat-grandfather!! (unknown name)

If I am correct, your 2xgreat-grandfather Patrick and my 2xgreat-grandfather Daniel were brothers. That puts us in the same generation AND near each other (I am in AZ). Crazy!

I'd love to learn more if you have any information. My Daniel O'Connell was married to Bridget Kent in Shanagolden and they had all ten of their children there, including my great-grandfather, also named Daniel. My great-grandfather emigrated around 1895 and ended up in Rochester, New York. I also discovered today (thanks to researching your information) that his brother Michael went to Australia.

So, what a  day. New relations in Colorado and Australia!  This is truy a great site.

I am also planning a trip to Shanagolden. Date TBD.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Wendy
