I realise posting for information on an O'Donnell family in Galway may be pushing it, but you never know your luck!

I'm looking for anyone who may be connected to or who may know of my O'Donnell family of Ballindoon parish, Galway. My GGG grandmother Anne Marie O'Donnell was born in Ballindoon parish circa 1839. She sailed to Perth, Western Australia in 1859 and in 1860, married William Fortune, an ex-convict. On her marriage certificate, she said her father was Valentine O'Donnell, a farmer and Protestant.

Anne, her husband and children ended up in and near Mackay, Queensland, Australia by 1868. Her brother, John Valentine O'Donnell, was by this time a publican of the Criterion Hotel in Wood Street, Mackay. John was previously a police officer in both Springsure and Mackay, Queensland before buying the hotel. Prior to that, he was serving in the Royal Irish Constabulary in the mid to late 1850's in Kildare, Ireland before supposedly transferring to join the English Constabulary in 1857. By 1863, John was a Senior Constable in Springsure, Queensland, Australia.

DNA matches have indicated I have matches to the O'Donnell's through O'Flaherty and Conneelly families (which are also common).

Anne O'Donnell died in Mackay, Queensland in 1875 and her youngest 4 children were placed in a Catholic orphanage.

I would love to hear from anyone who may know of our family, particularly people based in Ireland.

Cheers
Mel

  • Hi McCoy,

I'd actually seen those baptisms but I assumed my O'Donnell's were Protestant.  When John O'Donnell joined the RIC in 1854, he said he was Protestant and when my GGG Grandmother came out to Australia in 1859, she said she was a Protestant on the shipping list.  She married her husband William in the Methodist church (he himself was methodist).  However, any DNA matches I have that are associated with Galway are all Catholics within their family trees.

Do you know if a Catholic would lie to say they were Protestant for any reason during the mid 1800's?

One of my DNA matches is a descendant of Laurence FLAHERTY and Mary O'DONNELL Pollrevagh, Ballindoon, Galway.  Mary would have been born circa 1830.  I have found her in the 1901 and 1911 census and the births of many of her children. Again, Laurence and Mary were Catholic.  I wonder if Mary and my Anne and John were siblings?  I have quite abit of information on these families.

Another DNA match has COONEY and KANE in her tree from Errislanan, Derrigimla and Cushatrough.  Once again, they were all Catholic.  I have alot of information on these families also.

I've just come across these Church of Ireland marriages:

I find the second marriage interesting considering the groom was a police constable just like John O'Donnell who joined the RIC.

  • Hi Mel,

I recommend that you acquire a copy of Miriam Moffitt's book. "SUPERS & JUMPERS"  The Protestant Missions in Connemara - 1848 - 1937. It will answer many of the questions you have raised.

    Best Wishes,

    McCoy
