Greetings from NZ

Here's what I have so far on our branch of Hallorans and McInerneys. On the 13th February 1866 Michael Halloran married Mary McInerney in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Clooney. They were recorded as being residents of Cloonagowan at the time.  Michael's father is recorded as Patt on the register.  Mary was born around 1835 and her father is James. Patt and James and Michael were farmers. As best as I can tell James was born around 1806 and his wife was a Margaret Sullivan. Any confirmation or additions to this info would be most welcome.

Michael and Mary had 4 sons : Martin, Patrick,  Michael and John (Jack).  I have the dates of their baptisms. Jack was born in 1874 and is my husband's grandfather. In 1875 when Jack was just a baby the whole family emigrated NZ on a ship called the Howrah and had 3 more children, Thomas, Daniel and finally a daughter, Mary, who died aged 14. The Howrah made 3 voyages to NZ and the Hallorans came on the 2nd trip.

Michael was recorded as being 43 when he emigrated suggesting an approx 1832 birth, however his death certificate when he died in 1900 records him as being 79 at the time suggesting being born in 1820. Mary had already died so maybe nobody was sure of dates and ages. All the paperwork refers to them as Hallorans however Jack picked up the O (of) again and their headstones all have them as O'Hallorans. I understand it is not uncommon to lose and regain the O. Sadly Jack was the only one of all those sons to marry. He married Nora Crowley(originally from Bantry). And their only child was a daughter, Mary.  My mother in law. And so that line of O'Hallorans has come to an end.

Jack was born in Sraheen. I think I have found it on a map, not far from Ennis, on a road that has a place called Cree and another called Crowhill and Norrie Henchys Bar on the corner. Is this right?

I'm pretty happy with how far I've got so far but I'd love to be able to add Michael's mother and any siblings plus Mary McInerney's siblings that may have remained in County Clare.

Miriam and Jane have already given me invaluable assistance (thanks so much ladies) and I am reposting this edited verison of an earlier Limerick based posting here on the Clare message board where it belongs. We are visiting in August.

Kind Regards

    Hi again

Just an update of our recent visit to County Clare looking for connections to O'Hallorans and McInerneys. Thanks again to Jane for introducing us to another generous Ireland Reaching Out volunteer, another Kennedy at that, Gerry this time. Gerry arranged for us to meet Celia who is most likely a 3rd cousin of my husband. By comparing my research to Gerry's we're fairly certain that Great grandfather Michael O'Halloran's mother was a Mary Markham and that Michael had a number of siblings so I have plenty more research to carry on with. Thanks also to the O'Hallorans of Elmdale House B&B. Although there appears to be no direct connection to our O'Hallorans Matilda and her father were able to direct us to a graveyard near Sraheen, Tulla and I am still working my way through the names on the headstones from there. Again we were almost overwhelmed by the hospitality and generosity offered by everyone we encountered in Ireland.

    Go raibh maith agat
