Looking for information re. my great grandfather, Owen Hevey, and his twin brother, Thomas Hevey.  Born 17 Mar 1860 in Cloonkeen, baptized at parish in Athenry to parents Michael and Catherine (nee Moynihan) Hevey.  Owen and Thomas left for America (date unknown) leaving behind their parents and siblings - Patrick, Sarah, Michael, Mark, John and Catherine Hevey.  Any/all information or help would be greatly appreciated.  Lisa (Chicago, Illinois USA)

  • Hi there,

Do you already have the baptismal record for the twins? If not, you could contact the parish priest in Athenry for information. Birth only start from 1864 in the General Register Office (GRO). The baptismal records for Athenry start from 1858. You could check the National Library of Ireland reference number Pos.2442.

Have you looked for their parents in the land records the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available online here: www.askaboutireland.com

You could also check the 1901 or 1911 census records (also free online) for the other remaining family members.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

    Genealogist (Ireland XO)

  • Hi Tommy:

Thank you for reaching out to me re. my great-grandfather Owen Havey.

Owen's birth certificate spells his last as name as "Hevey", but once in America, Owen spelled his last name "Heavey" and then it somehow changed to "Havey" along the way.  The same happened with his twin brother, Thomas Hevey, when they came to America together.  Owen and Thomas' parents are (according to marriage records in Wisconsin - Michael Heavey and Catherine Moynahan (Ireland).  See attached for documents.  Any/all help recording their family history in Ireland would be greatly appreciated.  Lisa Havey (Chicago, Illinois)  Email  L.Havey@att.net :

  • Thank you Michelle!

I apologize for not responding as my father had been ill since last August and just recently passed away this February. His passing has left a hole in my heart.  And, being that we were researching our family history together, I needed to take a break from it for a while.

But thank you again for all of your effort as it must have taken you a while to put this all together!  Please know that it has not gone unappreciated!   I, also, am not quite sure where Owen and Thomas fit in to all of this, but maybe they do. (Please Note:  I've added some documentation (birth certificates, marriage records) to this conversation thread.)

You've been a doll Michelle!  My sister and I plan on visiting your beautiful country someday as my father and I had always planned to do.

    With kindest regards,

    Lisa Havey (Chicago, Illinois)

  • Tommy Whelan again Lisa.

I am still wating for Michael Heavey to get back to me with the info on the Heavey family tree.

I did speak to him for a short while in Athenry about 2 weeks ago and he did say that he will get the info for me.

He did give me thid info, that when Michael heavey and Catherine Moynahan, were expecting  the twins namely

Thomas and Owen, that they were evicted from their home in Knockatogher which is a townland about 6 or 7 miles

away from  cloonkeen where the heavey family settled. He said also that when evicted from their homes that they were taken in by a member of the clegery of the church of ireland faith for a short time.I am not forgetting your quest on the Heavey clan i just need more time to get all the info from Mike Heavey.By the way my e-mail is anfearmor@live.ie

Regards Tommy Whelan,a long lost cousin i suppose.

  • Lisa, I am so sorry to hear about your fathers passing. I feel your pain, as lost my da a year ago. Like you with your dad, we were researching our family together. Each time I find  abit of info or want to double check something, I want to turn around and ask him and it's hard when he is no longer there. But, I know that continuing to do what we do is something each of our dad's would like.

Keep close all your memories of him and write down what you remember of him now.

I wish you all the best in the week and months ahead. It's a difficult and sad path at times, but do keep those good memories close and keep searching out the family tree. Super idea for your sister to join you on a trip to Ireland.

    All the very best

    Michelle
