Hi all I am searching for relatives who may have originated from County Roscommon. They were Roman Catholic . My great grand father was James GATENS/GATTENS who married in Port-Glasgow Scotland in 1852. His death record states that his parents were Francis GATTENS/GATENS and Catherine TRAVERS. From another relative's family tree ( I know the pitfalls of relying on family trees on the web ! ) I have a Catherine TRAVERS born 1811 in Roscommon to parents MichaelTRAVERS and Honor(a?) GALLACHER . I would like some help in tracing Catherine TRAVERS which may in turn lead me to her husband Francis. The GATTENS/GATENS origin has been a brick wall for a long time .
Thanks in anticipation from New Zealand Phyllis

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Below is a transcription from Roots Ireland showing Catherine was baptized in the Croghan RC church. Crogahn would be up in northeast Roscommon not far from the Longford border. I did not find any Catherine Travers marriage records in Roscommon on Roots where the spouse had a first name of Francis. Could they have married in Scotland? Gatten does not appear to be a Roscommon surname. The closest would be Gately.
You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Thanks Roger. The couple FrancisGATENS and Catherine TRAVERS did not ever come to Scotland so I think we are looking for IRISH marriage and IRISH death records I have already done my ANCESTRY DNA so am not intending to do any futher DNA testing at present but it is good to confirm Catherine TRAVERS bith details.

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. I searched for records for Francis or Catherine Gattens/Gatens and did not see any Francis records and the only Catherine death in the 1800s was up in Co. Tyrone and the person died in 1876 and was 90 so a date of birth in 1786.

Thanks again Roger . Any chance of births of children to Francis and Catherine after about 1830 in Castlemore ? They had sons called James and John . R egards Phyllis

Thanks again for going to the trouble of checking the records for me . There is a famly story that the GATTENS/GATENS came from Donegal ( where no one knows!). It was wonderful to find the TRAVERS connection in Roscommon and I am woefully ignorant of its location. I need to sort out my Irish counties before I go much further in the GATTENS/GATENS family saga.
Regards from New Zealand . Phyllis

FYI-Travers is also found in Co. Donegal. Finding pre-1850 RC records for Co. Donegal is almost impossible.
