My family is from county Longford right in the middle of parish Katherine. I can’t find a parish Catherine or Katherine. My cousin gave me this info and she has the family bible that came from Ireland with relatives named and dates of birth.  Has anyone heard of this parish? My family name is Skelly. They came to the US in the 1800’s.

  • Their names were John and Ann Skelly. I’m not sure when they left Ireland, but they had Tom F Skelly in Colton, NY1863. In the family bible they spelled the name Skally then started spelling it Skelly. I have a picture of the family bible with his name and it says he’s from Rathcline my cousin told me Katharine I zoomed in and could see the ink is faded making the R look like a K. It’s in cursive and hard to read. I can’t make outthe name of the town. The first letter could be an E or a C. The next letter looks like an L, but it looks faded. Maybe the paper got wet at one time. the next letters are clear “on”. I can’t make out the next letter, maybe a j or g then “oo” then an n or an r. So it looks like Clongoon, Clonjoor, Elonjoor or Elongoor, etc. The first, fourth, and last letter I’m not sure about. Do any of those look familiar? John and Ann were married in NY in 1848. I’m not sure if they met in NY or in Ireland just that they are both from Ireland. Is there a way to upload pictures to here? Thank you for your help!
