Hello!

I've recently discovereed my ancestors from the Monasterevin area and I'm just beginnng my research! There is a grave in the Passlands Cemetery that was erected by John Bell "in memory of his friends." This grave includes John's brother Thomas, son Patrick, mother Catherine, wife Catherine and Michael Hunt. I got this info from a very poor quality photo off the internet. Unfortunately, I can't decipher the dates or much more of the engraving other than a few of those names. I haven't been able to find any contact info for the cemetery to make in inquiry. Can anyone provide guidance on where I could find that info?

Many thanks,

Marion Bell

  • Hi Marion,

Here is a link to a photographer who has taken some shots of Passlands cemetery. Maybe you could contact him to see if he has a photo of John Bell's grave in his collection. His name is Ed Mooney. All the best.

  • Hi Marion,

I'm not sure what information you have, and you may have already seen this, but attached is a link to the 1901 census which lists John Bell in Monasterevan, along with his 2 grandsons John Reddy and Michael Hunt. Is this the Michael Hunt you mentioned?

  • Hi Teresa,

Thanks so much for the responses!  I'll check with Ed Mooney. Yes, I did find that entry in the 1901 census and they are my Bells! Curious about why John, at his age and a widower, would have his two young grandsons living with him. Michael Hunt's father, Michael Hunt, was killed in Thules while on duty as an inspector with the R.I.C. in 1919. That was an interesting story I uncovered in my research. However, there's not much on his wife, Catherine/Kathleen/Kate Bell, who is my ancestor (John Bell's daughter).

Still so much more Bell and Rourke family information for me to uncover in my research - this has been exciting work, since discovering my connection to Kildare!

    Warmly,

    Marion

  • Hi Marion,

I found Michael Hunt's birth record, showing his mother Kate Bell, here is the link. I'll keep looking for other information and revert.

  • Hi Marion,

Here is the link to Michael and Kathleen Hunt's 1911 census. They lived in Dingle, Co. Kerry at the time. It shows Michael Jnr aged 12 - as you mentioned, the 1901 census has him living with his grandfather in Kildare aged 2.

I also found Michael and Kathleen in Drumlish, Co. Longford in the 1901 census below - that would explain why Kathleen was not in Kildare on the night the census was taken, she must have been visiting her husband.

  • Hi Marion,

I found Michael and Kathleen's marriage cert (which says Catherine), here is the link: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1900/10347/5766852.pdf

  • Hi Teresa,

This is all great news! Thank you so much!

Since Catherine Mary/Kate/Kathleen has been known in records by so many names, it does make it hard to find her death record. I found more info on her siblings, though, which has been exciting. I love that irishgenealogy.ie website! what a gift THAT has been.

Kate (I'm going with that name for now) and Michael's son, Michael John, was also in the R.I.C. after serving with the Royal Irish Rifles in WW1.

Yes, you're right. Kate must have just been visiting her husband in Drumlish in 1901. It makes sense that she was likely living with her father and young son, during that time while her husband was in Co. Longford. Still, I wonder why John Bell's grandson, John Reddy, age 16, was living with him in 1901. I found John Reddy's family in the 1901 census. I'm guessing that he was old enough to go live with his granddad and help out. Grand dad, John Bell, was listed as a Grain Merchant on the 1901 census.

Thanks again for all your help!

    Stay well,

    Marion

  • Hi James,

Thanks for writing. I'm happy to share what information I have with you on the Bell family. Do you have a family tree online?

Kathleen Bell was my great grand aunt. Her brother, Thomas, was my great grandfather who emigrated to New York City. I've been wondering what happened to Kate and her children. If you're a Hunt and she was your direct ancestor, I would guess that you're great grandfather was either Michael John, Cecil, or Vincent! Do you have more info you can share around what happened to her and her family after the death of her husband?

I'd be grateful for any info you can share.

    Marion
