Hello,

I have been looking for the townald my greatgrandmother, Winfred Louise Healey/Healy and her parents came from in Co Roscommon without success for nearly 2 decades. Recenty as I was researching a DNA match I was able to trace my match's family back to the neighboring townlands of Clooneish and Cloonfad. Researching the available Catholic parish registers for Moore shows records beginning in 1876 so that is likely why I have never found any church records for the family as all known births and marriages before then.

However, in searching Griffith's Valuation records I did find a Patrick Healy (the name of her father) who leased land in Cloonfad, one lot with a house and one lot just of land shared with a John Coghlan, a possible brother or relative of his wife, Mary Coughlan. I was also able to find a civil death record for a Patrick Healy on 3 July 1867 which matches almost exactly information engraved on a famiy monument erected on the family burial lot in 1883 (when the lot was purchased) or later. I have long believed that Patick likely died in Ireland and this appears to confirm that.

I am hoping that someone from Cloonfad and/or a relative may have information on Patrick's and his wife's families that can confirm the infomation that I have found. Patrick Healy (abt 1819-1867) and Mary Coughlan (abt 1823-1893) had six known children who immrigrated to the U.S. Five settled in Waterbury, CT with Mary; Mary, Kate, Lizzie, Bridget and Winifred, while the sixth, son Thomas was living in Boston, MA at the time of his mother's death.

One of the posts here linked to Historicgraves,.com with transcriptions of three cemeteries in the parish. In Kilbegley there was a listing for several Healys from Clonfad with the inforemation provided by a Susan Hugent (nee McKee). The oldest named Healy on the memorial, Michael (d. 1840) could be the possible father of my second great-grandfather Patrick. Patrick and Stephen, the known son of Michael, are the only two Healy's recorded is Griffith's Valuation as leasing land in Cloonfad.

Any help with this family would be apprciated.

Sincerely,

Sean Pickett

    Hi Seán,

Welcome to the IrelandXO Co. Roscommon Community!

Well, the good news is ... O'Healy ranked among the gentry of Co. Sligo down to the Cromwellian period, so your DNA came from good stock!

So we're looking for a Winfred Louise Healey/Healy/Hally (Ó hEilidhe) down south near Shannonbridge, Ballinasloe...

Q1. Are Patrick  Healy (c1819-1867) and Mary Coughlan (c1823-1893) her known parents or possible parents? You said her parents were born in Co. Roscommon, do you have any other confirmation?

    PRE-FAMINE RECORDS

Have you checked out the 1828 Tithe Applotment Records for Cloonfad?

In 1828, you will find 1 Healys and 1 Couglan:

Map of Healy-Coughlan homes at Old Town, Cloonfad: .  Looking at the map you can see the Healy/Coughlan farmhouses are centred around Old Town, Cloonfad. Which suggests that this village was possibly a strong family cluster of in-laws.  It certainly looks like John Grey aka John Green #2a Old Town may have been the original family. The farmhouses all had nice orchard plantations, so they were doing alright. Thomas Turley #3a probably married into Old Town sometime prior to Griffiths. Anyway, you can see how Patrick Healy & Mary Coughlan came to be matched!

    • #1 (23 acres) shared by John Coughlan  & Pat Healy
    • #4a Old Town John Coughlan
    • #5a Old Town  Patrick Healy
    • #7a Old Town James Coughlan
    • #8 25 acres held by James Coughlan.

By the turn of the century, only Greene and Healy were still here. James Coughlan's house at 5a became an outbuilding and is still standing (Google Street View)

So, I'd surmise that any long-timer from Old Town, Cloonfad would be potentially related to your Healys & Coughlans. You might try contacting the administrator of cloonfad.org to track down a historian for Old Town in particular.

  • Hi Rua,

Thank you for your quick reply. The answer to your question is yes, there are enough records in Waterbury, CT to confirm Winfred and her sinlings parents were Patrick Healy and Mary Coughlan. It also appeaers that several Couglan relatives of Mary's also settled in Waterbury, but I need to do more research confirm that.

Yes, I did look at the 1828 Tithe Applotment records for Cloonfad, as well as the maps. Thank you for the information and links, as well as the link to cloonfad.org and suggestion I contact the administrator. I will read through the back issues and also contact him as your suggest.

  • Hi Sean,

Well then,  with Mary Coughlan and Patrick Healy in your sights, you can be confident that you are on the right track looking at Old Town.

I'm sorry, that cloonfad.org link is wrong. It's for Cloonfad (Kiltullagh) rather than Cloonfad (Moore).  I will dig a bit more to see what I can come up with.

    Have you seen this post?

  • You probably know this already (from the grave inscriptions at Kilbegley Cemetery) which match the civil records:

Patrick Healy Jr. (1859-1926) & Honoria Loughnane (1860-1908) who appear in the 1901 Census at Cloonfad ... were married on 14 February 1884. Patrick was the son of Stephen & Mary Healy of Cloonfad, Farmers. Honora was the daughter of John Loughnane of Creagh, Ballinasloe, farmer.

Their surviving children all emigrated to Boston:

    Catherine Healy (28 Jun 1885 - 4 Jan 1958) m. CREHAN

    Mary Healy (15 May 1887 - 2 Jun 1965 ) m. FORDE

Honora Healy (27 Jan 1889 - 4 Feb 1955) m. Pat McKEE of Clonfad on 19th Feb. 1917 in Clonfad Chapel.

    Brigid Healy (18 Jan 1891 - 13 Dec 1894) died age 4

    ===

Stephen & Mary Healy of Cloonfad [GV#9a] lived on a 13 acre farm west of Old Town which matches the original holding of Michael Healy (d. 1840) & Bridget Costello recorded in the 1828 Tithe Records (with 8 Irish Acres).

    ===

Patrick Healy Sr. [GV#5a] matches the original holding of  Thomas Healy and Partners next-door to Coughlans. It is this holding that you probably need to consider as being that of Pat Healy & Mary Coughlan

I have created a building Chronicle for Old Town for you. I may help if you post an ancestor Chronicle for both the Healy and Coughlans here and link it to this building. In time, somethine will turn up I'm sure.
