Patrick Burke / Ann Healy Ireland to Adelaide 1850s

A check of Subscription site  www.rootsireland.ie has the following for a Patrick Burke:

Baptisms: Carrabane - Galway - August 23rd 1834 - Mother - May Moran

1834 - January 12th - Carrabane - Mother - Bridget (surname not clear)

1834 - November 19th - Killimor - East Galway - Mother - Mary Larkin

I835 - Castlegar - Galway - Mother - Mary Melia

1835 - Kinvara - Galway - Mother - Bridget Stanton

The folllowing free Sites will show property owners for the late 1840's to 1860's for Michael Burke and James Healy  www.askaboutireland.ie/Griffith's and catholicparishregisters@nli.ie - National Library for baptisms. All baptisms are not online.

Apparently, the first born boys were named after the grandparents!

Attached marriage records for Patrick Burke and Anne Healy in 1857.

Burke was/is a very strong Galway surname as McCoy identified with the 1834 baptisms in that county. The surname is also found in great numbers in counties like Mayo, Cork, Tipperary, Limerick etc. So you have a very common surname with only the father's name. You also don't know if Patrick and/or Ann gave their correct age when they married so the year of birth may be different.

If you can't locate any info on Patrick's mother or Ann's mother, I think your next step is to take a DNA test. You will get matches with 3rd and 4th cousins and hopefully some will be on your Burke/Healy line.  They may have more info on the origins of your family.

Could the attached relate to your "Patrick Burke". Native county - Tipperary!

I see where another "Patrick Burke" married in St. Patrick's in June 1856 to a Mary Purcell.

The death records of Patrick and Anne may show the names of their mothers.

If this is your Ann Healy, she was from Limerick.  This info from Ancestry.

To add to the Post by Patricia, there is another "Anne Healy" who arrived in Adelaide in January 1856.

She is recorded as being from County Clare.

Thank you so much McCoy! There’s some good leads to investigate.

And those marriage transcripts are more detailed than the ones we have.. very interesting that they have Ann’s birth year 1831..

Also, is it weird that those transcripts have heaps more details than the actual marriage record that I have!?

Have nearly gone cross-eyed trying, but haven’t been able to pinpoint their arrival.. they don’t appear to have arrived together.. there are several ‘contenders’ for both of them arriving separately in Adelaide around that time, and dozens more throughout Australia  :/

Patrick died at Little Sisters of the Poor in 1940, and they have his mother listed as MARY Healy.. I’ve had to put this down to being a record oddity, because every other record says ANN.. (but have certainly checked also out every Mary Healy going, to no avail)

Thanks for your thoughts Roger McDonnell.. We have circumstantial evidence pointing to Burke origins in Limerick, but also some suggesting Tipperary.. and family lore says Kerry, though that could be further back!

DNA has already helped, we wouldn’t know as much as we do without it.. but still learning really.. and of course the DNA throws out just as many questions as answers!
