I am seeking information on Patrick Fitzgerald of Stradbally, Co. Laois, born on or about June 9, 1820 (according to naturalization documents).  He married Margaret (nee Ryan, Regan, or Cunningham!) in the mid- to late-1850's and they then spent a few years in Salford, Lancashire, England, before immigrating to America and settling in Lynn, Massachusetts.  I have not been able to document his birth, baptism, or marriage, but would very much like to do so, since I am trying to fit him into my family tree correctly.

DNA testing reveals that he is a relative; I believe he is the uncle of my great-grandfather William O. Fitzgerald, born in Stradbally about 1840, who also settled in Lynn, Massachusetts.  William's parents were John Fitzgerald (1809? - 1871?) and Anne Callaghan (1806-1886), and I think his grandparents were named William and Mary.    Patrick Fitzgerald's death certificate gives his parents' names as William and Bridget.

Any help in unraveling the relationship between Patrick Fitzgerald and William Fitzgerald would very much be appreciated.  Interestingly, the 1861 England census lists Patrick and Margaret living in Salford with their two children born in Lancashire and with two nephews from Ireland, both shoemakers.  The nephews are named William and Patrick; I believe this William was my great-grandfather.  He is listed as married, and it appears that he had left his wife Mary Anne (nee Tunstead) behind in Ireland to seek work in England.

Thanks in advance for any light someone can shine on this!

  • Hi Paddy,

Thanks so much for your response.  You did a lot of research on my behalf, and the information that you provided is very useful.  It was particularly helpful to have the information both on John Fitzgerald/Anne Callaghan's offspring and on Patrick Fitzgerald's probable siblings.  I do suspect that Patrick's father William Fitzgerald and John Fitzgerald were brothers, but this may have to remain a genealogical mystery.  I wasn't able to find an entry in the Stradbally baptism register for John Fitzgerald (son of John Fitzgerald/Anne Callaghan) on 15-07-1849 -- any thoughts on this?

Thanks again, Paddy -- I really appreciate your time and effort.

  • Hello again Kate,

I am not surprised you could not find John Fitzerald's date of baptism. The records are a bit of a mess for that period. I will not attempt to explain it by way of email, you can have fun looking at them yourself. I will guide you to the entry for John Fitzgerald.

Having accessed the website at :http://www.registers.nli.ie and inputted Stradbally in the parish box, then enter baptism in event box, 1849 as the year, and July as the month in the appropriate boxes. Press apply. A page headed 1849 appears and it is numbered 102 in top left. However, despite being headed 1849 there is no sign of John Fitzgerald in July on this page. Scroll the pages upward until page  No. 98 appears alao headed 1849. Look at July and you ahould see the entry for John. There appears to have been two Julys in 1849 !!!. Hope this works for you, if not let me know and we will try something else.

    Best wishes,

    Paddy.

  • Hello Paddy,

Thank you for your helping me find John Fitzgerald's record in the Stradbally register.  Your directions were great, and you gave me a good laugh as well -- if the weather weren't too hot, I wouldn't mind having two Julys in one year!  Again, I appreciate your time and effort ... I think you have more patience than I do!

    All the best,

    Kate
