Looking for help to discover more about my Great Grandfather Patrick McGovern. He was born around 1869 in IRE. and moved to Middlesbrough Yorkshire and married Mary Ann Connors. Patrick came to the US in 1926 and in the ships passenger list notes he came from "Ballinamore". Patricks father is Andrew McGovern and mother is noted as Mary Gilchrist on his death notice. When he lived with his children in Brooklyn during the 1930 census one of the sons noted that his father was born in Northern Ireland not the Irish free state. I believe Ballinamore is very close to the boarder so this may have been just an oversight? Patrick passed in 1934 in Queens NY. Thank you all in advance for any help.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Patrick McGovern is very elusive. Civil registration started in Ireland in 1864 and civil birth records can be found on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  I searched from 1864-1872 and did not find a record with the parents names you provided. The RC parish for Ballinamore would be Ballinamore/Outeragh. Also there were variants to the surname McGovern such as Magauran

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland for all of Ireland and did not find any baptismal records for McGovern/Magauran children with father Andrew and mother with the surname Gilchrist.

I also searched the subscription site FindMyPast because Co. Fermanagh records are not on Roots Ireland and did not find a record.

I searched for a death record for Andrew McGovern/Magauran and did not find a record.

    Any other family clues?

Maybe someone else with have better luck.

Thank you Roger. I attached the passenger list record which notes "Ballymore" as a place of birth which I assumed was Ballinamore? Perhaps I was looking at the wrong area? His death index noted a birthdate of 1859. Thanks again for your help.

There are a number of Ballymores in Ireland including a town, civil parish and RC parish in Co. Westmeath  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballymore,_County_Westmeath   However, RC records for Ballymore parish in Westmeath go way back so Patrick's baptismal record should have come up unless his parents names are not correct.

I assume none of his children were born in Ireland? Have you looked at British census records to see if there are any clues on his county of origin?

  • Hello Miriam,

Thank you for responding. Patrick immigrated at some point to Middlesbrough in Yorkshire and married mary Ann Connors. All of their children were born in the U.K. and then migrated to the U.S. in the 1920's. None of the U.K. census records show details on Patrick's birth place other than Ireland. I only have Ballinamore from the ships passenger lists on his voyage from Liverpool to New York in 1926. Thanks in advance for your help.
