Hello, I'm looking for information about Patrick, Elizabeth and George McIntyre from (I think) Coleraine. George was born about 1827 in County Derry, Ireland according to the 1871 Scotland Census. He moved to Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland at some point before 1841. He was an Iron miner. Patrick is described as a soldier on George's death record, and was born around 1801? Elizabeth's maiden name was Taylor, and she was born around 1803? I think George might have had a sister called Esther who was born in Coleraine around 1821 and who also moved to Scotland and married Thomas Henny/Hainey in Kilbirnie in 1837. Thanks for any help.

  • This is the only Patrick McIntire in the 1831 census for Co. Derry. He lived in Killowen which is that part of Coleraine that’s on the west bank of the Bann so the location fits well with your information about Esther being from there.

The household consisted of 3 men and 3 women, 5 were RC and 1 was Church of Ireland.

Unfortunately the RC parish records for Killowen don’t start till 1843, so you are not going to find baptism or marriages for the family (assuming it’s the correct one). The Churhc of Ireland records don’t start till 1824 so if, perhaps Elizabeth was Churhc of Ireland, then you won’t find her baptism either.

I assume Patrick & Elizabeth remained in Ireland? I searched for Patrick in Griffiths Valuation (1859) but did not find one listed around Coleraine. However there was an Elizabeth Mcintire in Windy Hall townland, which is about half a mile from Coleraine. She is probably a widow and lived in a cottage with a small garden on plot 3d, John Linton’s farm.  She is deleted in 1886 but I can’t see a death record that matches that.

I didn’t see a death for Patrick in the Coleraine area suggesting he  had died by 1864 when death registration started.

  • Thank you so much for your information, it's very useful for me. I realise there isn't much information around for that time, but with Patrick McIntyre/McIntire being a soldier, do you think there would be any records for soldiers around that time? Just a long shot chance there.
Thank you again, I'm really grateful.

  • Yes there might be military records. Ideally you need to know which regiment he served with to narrow the search. Ancestry & Findmypast have some basic military records on-line. But the main collection of military records is in the National Archives in Kew. There is some basic information on-line but most records are in paper format and require a personal visit to Kew.
