Hello i am trying to trace back members of the McNamara and Powell families of Co. Clare.  I know they had one son John, was born appox 1830. This is stated on his marriage cert in 1858.  age stated on marriage cert is 28.  on the cert it only gives Co. Clare as a birth place and lists his Patrick his father as a farmer.

At the time of his marriage he was living in Bendigo, Vic, Australia .

If anyone has any info or can lead me in the right direction to fining his family i would be very thankful.

Regards Jude

  • Jude,

I attach a copy of the Tithe Records - County Clare - for a Patrick McNamara. You may be able to find a link somewhere.

I checked for a marriage of Patrick McNamara and Ellen Powell. No record found. Likewise with a baptism of a John McNamara. Did John have any siblings?

County Clare library has a record of baptisms and marriages for various years, but not many go back to the 1830's.

  • Hi Jude I have McNamara’s and Powell’s in my family tree having been born in County Clare and living/dying in Australia.  I have a John and Patrick McNamara and Ellen Powell but cannot connect them to your information or each other but you never know we might get connected somewhere down the line.

    regards

  • McCoy and Doreen, thank you for replying.   Thank you McCoy for the info that you sent.  I know year of births can sometimes be very vague so im looking at all aspects with a variation of 5 years. Im now also trying to see if there was a chance it was a diff area of Ireland. I am hoping to visit my State Library once the kids are back at school to see if i can find any kind of immigration records as well as any kind of electoral rolls which may give more hints.

I have attached a copy of the marriage entry which i have gained the info of Co. Clare.

    Doreen,

I have attached a copy of the death entry for John (13034) ,  it shows 2 children deceased. they were john and Ann.  the only surviving child of the union  was James Patrick.    Given the fact they seem to have passed on parents and siblings names onto thier own children. there is a chance that Ellen Powell could actually be Anne Ellen, or Ellen Anne.  In regards to Johns siblings one could be an anne, James or Patrick. i dont know if the Death Entry i am showing you will bring you any closer to your famly tree? . I hope it helps either connect you further or eliminate one at least. x

    Jude,

I attach detail of the surname "Powell" in County in the 1820/30's. It shows that the name was quite common in the County, so a match with a McNamara would not be unusual. Most marriages in that period were with parishioners of the same parish, or adjoining parish, unless they were members of the British Services.

Relatives of former neighbours in Australia could be a source of information.

    Best Wishes,

    McCoy
