  • hi,

In 1911 Patrick and his wife Mary were living at Garraun (Coyle) (Killererin, Galway).

They had been married for 12 years and 9 children were born during the marriage, but only 8 were still living in 1911.

In 1901 it looks like Patrick is running a Pub and Grocery in Tuam, and has only 1 child Mary Ellen.

In 1901 at Garraun (Coyle) there is a 70yo Patrick Mitchell and his wife Mary living in the house, together with a young CUNNINGHAM granddaughter.

Whether this is the 1911 Patricks father I do not know.

There seem to be a few Patrick Mitchells born in 1864, none of them have parents named Patrick and Mary ??

  • I am the great grandson of the 1901 Patrick and Mary (nee Farrell) Mitchell. In fact the young Cunningham granddaughter living in the house in 1901 is my Grandmother, Mary. Mary's parents are Michael Cunningham (b. Dec 1875 in Togher Beg, Killererin) and Margaret Mitchell (b. Oct 1869 Garraun Coyle, Killererin). Mary emmigrated to New York City in 1905 at age 7 to join up with her parents who had to leave her behind due to illness. Patrick and Mary Farrell were married in Tuam (not sure which Church) in Sep 1854. Michael Cunningham and Margaret Mitchell were married at the Barnaderg Roman Catholic Church in Feb 1896. I would love to know if the 1911 Patrick is the son of the 1901 Patrick and Mary if anyone has made that connection.

  • Thank you for email.  I had earlier printed the 1901 Census sheet noting Mamie Mitchell, your Grandmother Mary and to date I cannot connect it to my Grandfather Patrick Mitchell and his wife Mary Fahy who also lived in that area a bit later on, noted on 1911 census.  I have not been able to find Patricks parents or any of his family and perhaps the folks that are your relations, could be mine as well.  I have found Mary Fahy's (only child) parents who are also noted in the Garraun Coyle area with a land holding. Patrick Mitchell was born 22 Feb 1864 as far as I can be sure, with him dying 1st Feb 1944. He married my grandmother, Mary Fahy in 1899.  In the later half of the 1800's and before returning to Tuam and then marrying Mary, he spent some time in the USA. My father who came to New Zealand in 1939 always told me there were 22 children, but we have only found 16 to date.  He did say some died at birth and as young children.  If any of this seems like we could be related that will be wonderful.  If you have any information re Mitchells from the Garraun Coyle area I would love to hear it.  Regards, MONA

  • I have just remembered a note I took from a phone call from my cousin in the USA.  He mentioned his sister had been friends with a Sally(?)  and a Doctor Danny Farrell?  Nothing more but I think it was that they were relations of ours.  Do you have a Dr. Danny Farrell?  It maybe a small lead that we all need to unravel this mystery.  Regards, Mona.

  • I have emailed my second cousin from Scotland who reminded me that a John Farrelll was a noted God Parent for my Aunt Mary Ellen Mitchell, born 1899 and the eldest daughter of Patrick & Mary Mitchell the folks noted on the 2011 Census.   Frank my second cousin also pointed out that Togher Beg, Killererin is very close to where they all lived.  His brother Michael has also been contacted by Ireland Reaching Out so possibly you have heard back from him as well?  I do hope this is a great chance meeting by us all and that we unlock who Patrick Mitchell's parents were.  Do keep in touch.  If you send me your email address I can contact you directly.  Thank you for what you have sent so far and I do hope my replies are a help to you in your search as well.  Regards, MONA

  • Griffiths Revaluation records show how the farm changed hands over the years...

    From 1850s to 1930s...

It usually pased from Father to eldest son...

These records are available at your local LDS Centre...

  • Thank you re the note that the Griffiths Revaluation records show how the farm changed hands over the years. Including years 1850 to 1930's.  We do not have the LDS centre here in our area, but there is an LDS Centre in Auckland and I will try and make time on my next trip there to visit the centre and find out who owned the land and who it got left too.  I found your web link very strange as it was the Mirror giving full particulars of a routine operation for obese people?  Surely a mistake website that I needed to read?

    Thanks for contact. MONA

  • Mona - i don't have a Dr Danny Farrell that I've come across. I have ordered the Killererin church records and the Garraun Coyle Griffiths revision books filmed by the LDS. I'm hoping to uncover the mystery soon. By the way i believe i have found my GG-Grandmother Mary (Farrell) Mitchell in the 1911 Census living with her married daughter Mary Farrell in Coolrevagh. It appears my connection to the Farrells has much to do with them running the corn mills in and around the Tuam area so I will be investigating that lineage as well. I hope to have as much research done as possible before i make the trek to Tuam next July. my email address is biggulz@aol.com. Peter Wynne

  • How wonderful to get your reply.  We are certainly onto something.  My (could be our ) second cousin from Scotland has gone to Tuam in June or July for the past three years and made some wonderful discoveries.  I call him "our man on the ground with iPad"  He has taken many photos of homes, sites, graveyards etc. and also met up with a few of our family members,  I started my search contacting a Father Waldron in Killererin, (now retired) who gave me wonderful assistance and have gone on from there.  When you have your dates for next years travel do let me know and maybe it will be the same time that Frank will be there. How wonderful would that be for you both to meet up. I am happy to provide more in depth family information via my personal email address.  If you are happy to do that let me know.  I will introduce you to Frank as well.  I have told him about you coming in from Ireland Reaching Out and he is up with where we are both at.  This is the break-through we have been waiting for.  Absolutely marvellous.  MONA

  • Kia ora - have already posted but will try here too

I live in New Zealand and have just discovered that Francis (Frank) Mitchell was my grandfather. The reason I have only just found this out was because I was adopted at birth and have just begun my biological family's ancestory. Frank Mitchell married Elsie Mabel Byron Ward and had my mother Colleen Mary Mitchell on 28 July 1947. I am still looking for his resting place (quite elusive at the mo). Can you help me with when and why Frank and his brother came out to NZ?

Appreciate any help / information you can provide.

Gav Sager (my birth name pre-adoption was Stephen Kerry Mitchell)

  • Thank uou Sean for your email re my new found second cousin, son of Colleen Mitchell and grandson of my Uncle Francis (Frank) I have emailed Gav direct with photos of his Grandfathers burial plot that lluckily I found by total good luck last year.  I do not have a lot of information on Frank or Elsie as they were pretty elusive and were not livng together for many years.  I have not seen either Colleen or her brother Raymond since the mid 1950's and do not know where they are living or if indeed they are alive.  I will send Gav a list of Frank's siblings and his Great Grandfather/Gread Grand Mother from Tuam in Galway over the next few days.  Anyone else who is connected to ouir familes, please contact Sean to pass on.  THANK YOU.
