I'm searching for Patrick Rourke born in Lisdorgan, Dingle, Co. Kerry Oct. 1, 1869.  His parents were Catherine Hanifin and Thomas Rourke.  He had a brother John who emigrated to Western Massachusetts {Hampden) sometime in the late 1800's..

Patrick followed his brother and lived with John and his family.  His name appears on the 1901 census but in 1910 he is no longer living there.  The story goes that he went out to Butte, Montana to work in the mines where he joined many more immigrants from the Dingle Peninsula like himself and that's where the story ends. I have tried to research him thru Ancestry and a few other sites. I can't find any trace of him. I have been told by older relatives that he married and had no children. He may have moved on to Idaho or California and it is said that he came back to visit Griffin relatives in Boston sometime around 1940 and then he left again and there is no trace of him.  There are a few Patrick Rourkes that can be found in the Butte city directory but I have no way of knowing if he is one of them.  I would just like to find out what happened to my granduncle Patrick Rourke.

  • Hi,

Perhaps it would help to pose this question to Butte Historical Society - http://www.buttehistorical.org/ . They may have local history and genealogy experts that could help navigate your search!

  • A Rourke Family Reunion is held annually at Park Head, Ontario, Canada (small village near Owen Sound).  There were a number of Rourke's who emigrated from Ireland and came to this area.  They have done extensive research on the family name.  Perhaps looking into this family tree might help widen your search but lead to relatives of your family member who left Ireland and went his own way?  My Great Grandmother Susie Rusk married a Rourke and my dad grew up in Park Head.

You could also look up Bruce Museum (Bruce County, Ontario, Canada).  Just a thought and I hope you find helpful.  Details Below:

  • Dear Susan, Thanks for your response. I have not been on this site for many months, hence the late reply. I appreciate meeting a fellow Rourke though we may come from different branches. I will look into the Bruce Museum and who knows I may make a connection. My great great grandfather John Rourke may have had brothers who landed in Ontario after making the treacherous voyage from Ireland, Anything is possible. Again thankyou for your reply to my query.
