I have been researching my husband Anthony Sharry's g g g g/parents PATRICK SHARRY and ANN GARTY, also his          gg grandparents PATRICK and BRIDGET SHARRY nee Crinion for several years without much success.

Patrick and Bridget were married in Killucan on 18th May 1862. They departed Liverpool  on the ship "Maryborough"  arriving in Australia on 16th Sept 1862.

Witnesses at marriage were John Quinn and Ann Sharry  Source : https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000635230#page/23/mode/1up

I believe Patrick's brothers were :   Name: Frances Sharry Baptism Age: 0 Event Type: Baptism Birth Date: 1828 Baptism Date: 24 Aug 1828 Baptism Place: Killucan, Westmeath, Ireland  Diocese: Meath Father: Patt Sharry Mother: Ann

Name:Wm Sharry Baptism Age0 Event Type Baptism Birth Date1831 Baptism  Date17 Mar 1831 Baptism Place Killucan, Westmeath, Ireland Parish Variants Raharney, Diocese Meath Father Patt Sharry Mother Anne Garty

I have searched the Griffin Valuation records and a CHRISTOPHER SHARRY comes up several times, also a BRIDGET SHARRY but I do not knowif they are connected.

I am visiting Killucan in March and I am hoping to maybe track down some family.

Any help any one can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks if advance.

  • Hi Glenda,

I have being searching the records for you and unfortunately I cannot make a direct connection between the Patrick Sharry who left Ireland and the Christopher Sharry who owned the property in Killucan in the 1850's. (Griffith's valuation records)  Christopher may have being a brother to your Patrick but you would have to search the NLI Catholic Parish records to be sure.  Christopher Sharry had a son called Nicholas who married in 1904 and their children, Tom, Christopher and Anne Mary lived in the village of Killucan up until the 1990's.  Their house is still in the village and there are also Crinion and Garty families still living in the area so when you call to visit the village, you could call into any of the business premises in the village such as Smyth's supermarket or Camillus Cleary's butchers and they would be able to point out the Sharry house to you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Mairead,

Thank you so very much for looking into this for me.  I will certainly be keen to see the house.  I am staying at an Air bnb in Killucan and the host has found a Garty connection for me which is great.

Patrick Sharry b1835 had been in an unmarked grave at the Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane Qld Aust for 95 years.  Bridget's grave we have been unable to find. My husband and I arranged for a plaque to commenorate both of them. Last Saturday we had a Dedication of the plaque with about 15 relatives attending.  It was a lovely morning.

    Thanks again for your help

    regards Glenda and Tony

  • HI again Mairead,

Something I forgot to mention is that I have found a Will for a Patrick Sharry naming Nicholas Sharry as below:

    Deceased SurnameSharry

    Deceased ForenamePatrick

    Primary Beneficiary/ExecutorNicholas Sharry

    Date of Death31 Mar 1895

    County of DeathWestmeath

We know that Patrick migrated to Australia.  Perhaps Frances and William predeceased Patrick Sharry snr or maybe the other 2 sons migrated as well, probably USA.  Food for thought.

    regards

    Glenda
